Age Group Rank = 35/38
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30am and made pancakes with a bunch of syrup. Drank a Gatorade on the way to the event. Two Advil 30 min before race started.
Event warmup:

Nope, just jumped into the water and waited for the gun.
Swim
  • 34m 53s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a good swim. It was the only part of the race I felt good about. Swam strait down the buoys with 3 feet of each. A lot of people complained about the buoys being to small but I sighted off the houses on the beach so I didn't have a problem seeing them. Wet suite strippers did a great job and the carpet between the swim and transition area was nice.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Bike
  • 1h 25m 11s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.50 mile/hr
Comments:

I should have pushed harder on the bike but was pacing myself so I would have a decent run. It sucked having so many guys pass me who I had beat on the swim but hey its a race. I was passed several times where you would have thought I was standing still even though I was running 18-19 mph the whole time besides the bridge! I obviously need to train on the bike more. I felt good the whole time so my new bike is setup just about right.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the bike. I was holding back so I would have a better run which I wound up not having anyway. Might as well have gone faster here.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 07m 32s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The 1st half mile I felt pretty good and had lots of energy but the my lower back started cramping up so bad that I had to stop and stretch it 6-7 times as well as walk so it would chill. I am certainly not a fast runner but this killed my run. Besides my back my legs felt fine off the bike and I wasn't breathing heavy. I could have pushed myself to knock at least a minute and half my mile times. Oh, well, at least I pushed through the pain and finished strong for the crowd at the finish line and my family.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, I must have done something for my back to cramp like it did because its never done it before.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, drank a couple cold beers and stood with my kids and wife while we watched the awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Back cramps on run. Need to focus on my running more. I can run a long way but not very fast.

Event comments:

Great inaugural event and my 1st Olympic distance. I'll be back next year and I'll be faster!
