Swim
Comments: Good swim. I deliberately kept the pace easy and still ended up tearing up the field. Start 30th and came out of the water 3rd. Felt great coming out of the water. When they set this up they try to start the swim so that we were swimming with the current. This time they missed and we swam against. That certainly cost some time. Only bummer here was losing my AG win streak which was up to four in a row. Turned out two really good swimmers showed up today in my AG. I may have beaten one, but the other was well faster than the field. What would you do differently?: Nothing - good effort. Transition 1
Comments: 9/22 in AG. Not bad. I took some time to get sand off of shoes and get socks on. Bike
Comments: Started off downwind and was holding 25+ for a while. Held a very constant power through the first 21 miles. Lots of divots in the road on the way out. The way back was a bitch, though. 5-10mph winds on the way back made going really tough. The detour into the state park didn't help any. About mile 21 my power output dropped and I started getting pretty uncomfortable on the bike. The brutal heat started getting to me, I think. This course is deceptive. It is flatter than flat (with the exception of the bridge). It wasn't terribly easy, though. My hip flexors still hurt. Still a good effort. What would you do differently?: Took one wrong turn when a police officer directed me that way. Only cost me 15 seconds or so, but next time don't do that. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty bad. Racked in wrong spot and had to find my spot. Had problems getting running shoes on as my calves wanted to cramp. Run
Comments: This was just brutal. 2/3 of the times were over an hour. The heat index was 96 at 6am and by the time the run was on it was 104 or so. Super high humidity. I wanted to quit at about mile 2. I started off well (8:16), but the heat really got to me. I ended up walking a bit just to drop my HR down and then running again. I took 3-4 cups of water at every mile. Still couldn't keep cool. What would you do differently?: I survived - pretty much all that mattered. Post race
Warm down: I was really overheated and was on the verge of heat exhaustion. I sat down and had 7-8 bags of ice packed on me to get my body temp down. Really in not so good shape (for some reason I don't cope with heat all that well). I really don't want to ever have to repeat that kind of run again. What limited your ability to perform faster: Ability to cope with super humid 100+ heat index type weather. Event comments: Other than the insane weather conditions, this was a good race. I put in great swim and bike splits. I can't be too upset about the run. It really wasn't a fitness issue - I simply have a very hard time in those conditions. And I managed to sneak on the podium by snagging 3rd in AG. Nothing wrong with that! Last updated: 2010-02-17 12:00 AM
