Swim
Comments: Happy with my swim performance overall. Have struggled a bit OWS lately, so this was great, as my breathing was good and my stroke was steady. Had to pull up twice in the first 150 meters to fix my goggles, but then it was straight through to the end. Navigation was poor - I started off on the outside (on purpose) but ended up right along the buoys very early. It worked out ok, as I was not in traffic. What would you do differently?: Better navigation I suppose Transition 1
Comments: My transition times continue to be slow, but I have not been trying to improve them much. I need to be more prepared and a bit quicker, but am not too concerned with it right now. What would you do differently?: Perhaps not wear cycling gloves, not wear a separate cycling jersey Bike
Comments: I have trained on hills, but the rolling hills were pretty tough on me. I pushed a bit too hard on the first half and it hurt my back stretch a bit. Quads cramped up a bit and feet hurt toward the end. What would you do differently?: More training, better pace Transition 2
Comments: Again, transitions are not my strong suit (of course, what is?). A bit better, but was sore from the bike so I did not transition too quickly. Fumbled with nutrition a bit, but shoes went on fine. What would you do differently?: Not sure, just be a bit faster I suppose Run
Comments: Very hot during the run. Ran uphill 2 miles until I caught up with Shawn, walked with him for about 3 miles, then went off on my own, running. Cramped up up 2 miles to go (calves and feet), and had a major cramp 100yds from the end when we had to get off the road (stepped on the curb and cramped up). Stretched it out and finished. What would you do differently?: Not sure had I run straight through if I would have cramped up earlier or not. Could have kept running instead of walking 2 miles in, but was not too concerned with time at that point, just trying to deal with the heat. Post race
Warm down: Stretched and iced my calves, had fluid and a popsicle, then loaded up and went back to the hotel. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat did not help, even though I am used to training in it in Phx. Cramps on the tail end of bike and run hindered my progress a bit. Event comments: This was my first half IM distance, so I am happy overall. Would have liked a better time, but with the heat and inexperience I am not complaining. Thought I lost my cyclometer as it was not on my bike after the race, but the race organizers had found it and sent it back to me right after the race (thanks!!). Love Las Vegas and will be back to compete next year (with better results hopefully). Last updated: 2010-03-02 12:00 AM

Got up early (0330), had a breakfast bar and 5 hour energy before the race, got to transition when it opened to pick a prime spot and relax. Hung out with wife and friends before heading down to the water for the start.
Light stretching, short swim in the lake to get my breathing in rhythm.
