Swim
Comments: Swim was HORRIBLE! I think I had an anxiety attack when we started because I just couldn't get a good breath and the water started getting more choppy so breathing out either side during the crawl was swallowing or inhaling water. So I flipped and started doing backstroke, still issues with water. Amazingly I remained on course even hitting the turn buoy at one point. I tried relaxing and just floating for a minute to catch my breath but never happened. Did a good 95% of the distance on my back. But considering I did backstroke I'm happy with the time. What would you do differently?: Try to relax, bring noseplugs so at least water is only going in one hole and I can at least spit the water out. Transition 1
Comments: First time with the wetsuit so I'm happy with T1. Getting a little better with each transition and practice. What would you do differently?: Quicken the pace. Need to get different bike shoes and learn to attach them to the pedals for smoother transition. But I'm not looking to become "elite" so not too worried about my transition time. Bike
Comments: Bike was a good route. I actually passed a few people and really thought I was kicking it on the route. The hills were mild compared to the Irongirl Columbia route or just Howard County in general so it was nice. Crosswinds were a bear though but guess it will prepare me for my HIM. I'm happy with my performance but not so much my pace or time. What would you do differently?: Push it harder and try to pick up the pace. Transition 2
Comments: Haven't tried the whole keeping shoes in clips and removing feet, biking on shoes thing yet. Dismounted in area and walked/jogged my bike into transition. What would you do differently?: More electrolytes/hydration on bike. But this was 12 miles so not too bad. Run
Comments: Running coach at my local running store had recommended that during the last 5 seconds of my run interval I try to pick up the pace and he'd guarantee I'd cut my time on the run. Sure enough I did that here and got in under 45 minutes. Last season I had been running but still couldn't get under 50 minutes after the swim and bike. This time I was excited to see that it worked and will try to keep pushing it on the run. What would you do differently?: Drink a little more. Drank Heed on the bike but kept water on the run. Think I would have liked to have been drinking the Heed on the run too. Push myself a little more on the run but was happy with my performance. Passed a few people!! Post race
Warm down: Walked around transition area and to my truck. Drank Recoverite and had a couple of mini-bagels with peanut butter and a banana. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim really kicked my butt. Event comments: Race was just a bit delayed because they brought the ambulance in for someone in the first wave in the water. They didn't bring him out so not sure what happened to them, maybe left on their own or stayed. But not much of a delay. Had a lot of kid volunteers but they were really good. Kept cheering everyone on and telling them how great they were doing, even the back of the pack turtles like me coming in at the end. Really fun race. Would do it again. Since it was a 10am start I had oatmeal and a bagel with peanut butter & honey and my morning coffee at 7am. Then around 9am I had a 1/2 Clif bar and made sure I had plenty of water. Last year I forgot to pre-hydrate before the Philly Women's Tri and ended up doing a duathlon on just coffee. Put my gear into transition, lubed up and put the wetsuit on. Talked to a few people in transition to get a feel for the race.
Not much..few stretching exercises and much anxiety about the swim.
