Swim
Comments: I also got a gutache abt 1/2 way through. Not sure if this was nerves (very possible), nutrition (don't think so.... but maybe), or lack of warmup (with a brand new cliff block svg in tummy - blood shunting from gut to muscles... etc... possible as well). What would you do differently?: FUTURE: 1) Get stronger and faster in the water so that I can hang with the better swimmers and not have to deal with that. The early swimmers didn't have any issues. 2) Do some early, hard workouts to see what my body needs at that time of day to be able to preform. 3) WARM-UP!!! Transition 1
Comments: Balance coming out of pool was a problem. I also insisted on puting slippers on out of the pool bec I was afraid of hurting my feet. Not worth it. Not confident enough to do shoes on bike. Baby poweder in shoes was a good idea. No socks necessarry for bike. Decided not to put on Garmin bec it was taking too long. Then it almost fell off bike. Had to hold it in my hand for big portion of race! Had to keep myself calm through transition. Will get better with practice. What would you do differently?: 1) No slippers for T1. 2) Practice shoes on bike. Not too worried abt that yet. 3) Practice T1 more. 4) Either figure out tricks for the Garmin or get a mount for it! Bike
Comments: Ugh. Was having nightmares about the bike! Especially the huge decent! Got passed by what seemed to be everyone in the first 1/2. I did, however, try to bring myself down to center before race and ask myself what the worst that could happen would be. A fall/injury. OK, but this course is going to be far more safe than anything you've ever done on the road. Just stay calm, and get your bearings together. You'll be ok. You're not going to win on the bike and that is ok. Thinking this way really did help. Actually ended up feeling more confident than I thought I would. Except for on the HUGE downhil where I tried to not ride my brakes the entire time. Had to talk to myself here, too. Talked to myself like I would have a spooked horse! Hahaha... "You're ok. You're doing just fine. Stay calm...." Hey, whatever works right now. There was a time when I couldn't put my foot in a stirup withough getting a pit in my stomach. I will get better at this - by leaps and bounds. Once the 1/2 way point came, I started to settle down and pass a LOT of people. Then my pedal fell off.... This is where I lost 4th-5th place - pretty sure. But I handled this really well. Stayed calm. Didn't crash. Just dealt with it and got back on. Then I was READY to GO! Hammered the entire rest of the way and felt really, really good that I made it through! What would you do differently?: 1) Practice A LOT MORE!!! TONS AND TONS of miles in the saddle!!! 2) Check every little screw on the bike the day before. Transition 2
Comments: Damn running shoes are hard to get on regardless! What would you do differently?: 1) Figure out running shoe situation. If they had a loop on back, it would be better. I can't get the fit down just right, so may look into a new pair. 2) Not sure about socks for run. Don't want to waste the time, but did get blisters from just a 5K. Blister pads didn't stay on either. (Over heel spurs.) 3) No more fuel belt. May consider getting a bottle that attaches to hand, but have not decided yet. Run
Comments: Pretty damn easy. Didn't feel so bad coming off the bike. Shoes are a problem though and no more fuel belt. What would you do differently?: 1) Look into a hand H2O bottle & put nutrition in back pocket. 2) Figure out shoe situation. 3) Work on some speed/fartlick drills. Pass tons of people, but need to be able to kick it up a notch when necessary. 4) Really, probably don't need nutrition for a 5K even if it is a tri. Post race
Warm down: Walked it out, stretched. Got a gutache again!! Nothing like the Austin 1/2 (2/14/10), but still no good. Is this from adrenaline letting down, nutrition screw ups, not ready for this effort yet? Don't know! Worried that this will happen during an event (happened after both times so far). If during event, I may be screwed. It's that bad. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental. I am strong. Possibly one of the strongest in the field this weekend (AG not overall). My mental game on the bike is no good. Event comments: Fun race. Not sure I will drive that far for a sprint again though. Good course for a first timer. Last updated: 2010-03-04 12:00 AM

Couldn't sleep any more by 4:30am. Got up and did some yoga. Laid back down for abt 20 mins. Got up at 5:15, started coffee and PB and bananna sandwich.
Pre-Race Nutrition:
1/2 PB & Bananna Sandwich; 1/2 cup coffee; 17 oz water bottle; 1 Ensure; 1 svg Cliff Blocks 15 mins before swim.
FUTURE:
Need to practice some early morning hard workouts to see what my body needs. Got a gutache in middle of swim. (Nerves, lack of warmup, or nutrition? Don't know yet...)
Really, nothing... Course map said there would be a warmup lane. There wasn't. Had to jump in the pool cold. I stretched and did some active warmup stretches to try to wake up muscles, but really needed something more.
FUTURE:
Don't trust race officials. Find a way to warmup abt 30 mins before start time. Anything.
