Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4, got dressed and hit the road breakfast in hand. 2 packets of oatmeal (only ate 1 though - not hungry enough after pasta the night before), 3/4 of a banana (the rest got all mushed up and gross so I wouldn't eat it), and a cup of milk. Drove to the park and took my time getting ready as it was pitch black and 50 degrees. Did my warm up - didn't talk much to people - then had my Gu right before heading to the beach.
Event warmup:

Didn't really monitor my warm up - left the GPS off. I wasn't feeling all pumped up - just not into it yet (tired and COLD!), so I just took it easy and spun around. Did one loop of the half-iron run course as my bike warmup - coming back I took off my jacket and did a couple quick periods of hard effort to get my heart going. Was feeling much more pumped getting back to the transition area. Sun coming up and a lot more people around. Then I put on my sneaks and went for a quick jog. Again, no idea how long I ran for - just until I felt nice and warm. Did some high skips and some sprinting too. Feeling nice and relaxed by now. Got into my wetsuit just as they were clearing out transition to get everyone to the beach. I wasn't going to get a swim warm up in (or so I thought) but since it was an in-water start, everyone was milling around in the water so I did get in and did some nice relaxed strokes. Those felt super good actually - really boosted me up - I was feeling relaxed and strong. Did the slowest strokes I could with tons of glide and stretching my sides. Nice warm up actually.

Comments:

I started slow. Wave was bigger than I was accustomed to. I kept swimming up on people and did not want to get kicked so I would back off look up for another path, and swim around. I went pretty wide of the first buoy. Then I really found a groove and started swimming harder. I'm definitely nervous that if I go out too fast - I'll screw everything up - so I start REALLY slow and defensive. I also took a mental note as I was finishing the course - how ready would I be to go 4x as far - and I would have been fine.
What would you do differently?:

Just be more aggressive from the start. Don't be so scared I wouldn't be able to recover if I sprint a little at the start.
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

Time was really long. I'm disappointed in this one - I need to get faster at this transition. Can't pinpoint an area to do it. I did use the stripper service which was fast. Did notice that I totally forgot to clean off my feet this time - guess I don't need that little bucket of water anymore, one less thing to carry with me. Really not sure what ate up all this time - I really wish other's T1 times were posted as I'd like to compare.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster! Have a sense of urgency maybe.
Bike
  • 48m 59s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Hills at the start - I was passing people and felt like I was going out too fast - knowing that pretty much the first half was all uphill. So I'd back down - then I'd come up on someone else and want to pass. I must have passed 30 people on the bike. Didn't drink much. Passed a lot of people going up hills and one commented to her friend about me. Played leap frog with a couple of women that kept me pushing.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder throughout. Drink more. Hoping the new aero bottle at the front will help with that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

This transition was fine for me. Run out of the transition area to the mat was forever - I think that's why it looks so long actually.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I don't think.
Run

Comments:

Only one water stop - at the halfway mark. So I did only one walking segment to stop and get my gatorade. Only had 1 cup - and drank very little on the bike. Granted - I didn't feel like I NEEDED anymore, even at the end. I knew my goal of 1:30 was in sight - so I tried to push on the run and I'm glad I did - felt good to fight a little. Got to figure out how to fight through the whole sprint like that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Standing talking with family and friends. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental questions. Not being confident I could push harder and still finish strong.

Event comments:

I felt really great about this race. I'm pretty proud of it. I think I made a lot of positive changes in the past 6 weeks. I wore my GPS for the whole thing this time which was awesome because I knew starting the run exactly what I had to do to hit my goal and it really helped to push me. I am so pleased that I was only 45 seconds out of 3rd place in my age group (and frustrated at the same time because had I known that on the bike I would have pushed harder). But still made me feel really good. And my body truly responded well - I didn't even take a nap on Saturday. As a matter of fact I swam with the kids. Really good race and gave me a little confidence going into my half in 3 weeks. I am looking forward to trying the longer distance finally. And then looking forward to the last sprint of the season too - no reason to hold back in that one!
