Swim
Comments: Like I said before this was my first tri, so it was all a new expirience for me. I was really worried about getting kicked in the face. I like to bi-lateral breath in the pool, but for some reason it's difficult for me to do in the ocean. I really really don't like the taste of ocean water, so it kind of jacks me up when I get some water in my mouth. My goggles also started to fog up and made it difficult to site. Although overall I didn't think it was half bad. What would you do differently?: I would go for the inside lane, and not worry about getting kicked in the face. I would just flat out swim harder. Nerves got the best of me. Transition 1
Comments: As I came across the mounting line I mounted my bike using the flying squirrel technique. Which worked very well for me. However when I when to put my feet onto my bike shoes my fee were still wet and kept slipping off. This forced me to dismount and correct the problem before moving on. In the end it cost me about 30 seconds. What would you do differently?: I would press harder on top of my bike shoes so that my feet were less likely to slip off. Bike
Comments: This was the strongest segment of the race for me. I get fustrated with these trade winds over here on the windward side of the island. It's like no matter which way I'm riding I'm always riding into the wind. What would you do differently?: I would probably have a better tuned bike, but other than that I was really happy with my bike segment. Transition 2
Comments: I had to put socks on because I didn't train to run without socks, so it took me more time to put my shoes on than I wanted it to. I also forgot my race belt with my bib number on it. I was so focused on getting through the transition that I forgot to put it on. What would you do differently?: Practice training without wearing socks so that my feet are used to it for race day. Run
Comments: This was my worst segment of the race. I'm just not a very good runner. To be honest I just really hate running. Probably should have stretched before the event began, but that's what newbs do I guess. I also wish the run course wasn't up a hill. I don't think you should have to race for time up a hill, unless you are racing for time up a hill. What would you do differently?: I'm going to run more coming off the bike to get used to it for race day situations. Also up the volume of my running. I don't think I run nearly enough as I should be running. Post race
Warm down: Didn't really do one. I probably should have stretched out a little bit. What limited your ability to perform faster: I changed the tires on my bike the night before, and it was a longer process than I thougt it was going to be. So I didn't get to bed until around midnight or later. Then had a 0500 wake up for the race. So I wasn't well rested for it. Event comments: This was my first race, so there is nothing to compare it to. I will say this though Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii did an outstanding job in their planning and execution of this well organized event. My hat comes off to a JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!! Didn't really have one. This was my first tri. I did forget by goggles and had to ride back home real quick. Luckily for me I only lived about a mile from the starting line.
A bike ride back and fourth to my house. Then a little 200m swim to loosen up. I should have stretched out better.
