Pre-race routine:

got there around 5:45. It was a very nice drive over the Key Biscayne bridge with downtown lit up. Waited a bit in line to park. Got to the site and left my wife and little one to got set up my transition. Got back with my new trisuit and wetsuit. I wanted to jog a bit, but I did not have an extra pair and had to leave mine in transition. Since I will be 40 this year, they put me in the 40-45 category, which meant we were the last to start. I did not want to warm up 45 minutes before start and then cool down again. It was pretty chilly in the morning... did some jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.
Event warmup:

A few jumping jacks and running in place.
Swim
  • 28m 27s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was pretty happy with my swim, specially since I decided to take it easy and not go full speed because I wanted to save myself for the bike and run. So overall I liked my time.
What would you do differently?:

If I had better running legs and my bike I think I could push it and drop a couple of minutes of the time.
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

I was a bit dizzy after the swim and it was a long run to transition, so I took it easy. Did get my wetsuit off quickly. Took me a bit to get my socks on and my Garmin on as well.
What would you do differently?:

I will start training with no socks... that should help. I should be able to shave off a couple of minutes if I hurry up a bit more next time, but again, I wanted to make sure I paced myself.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 12s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.50 km/hr
Comments:

I did the race on a borrowed road bike that I had never ridden before, so in that sense it was not bad, but it was a little frustrating not having my own bike or one that I had been fitted in. I think I could have shaved between 5 to 10 minutes with my bike. The uphill on the bridge was pretty tough. I saw someone actually walk up. I passed a few people and got passed by a few. It still amazes me how fast the ¨good¨ guys are.
What would you do differently?:

Take my bike and take more water. There was no water on the bike course and I only had one bottle with me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Pretty happy with this transition. I am sure I can get a bit faster, but probably not much.
Run
  • 59m 5s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 55s  min/km
Comments:

I am not a great or fast runner and definitively my weakest part of the race. I decided to start easy at my 6km/hr pace and pick it up in the later half. I got passed a bunch, and since it was a two lap course, a lot of the earlier waves were finishing. I was surprised to see how some people are just suffering out there. Since one of my goals from this race was to get a feeling of my pace for a HIM, I did not push it too hard. I was happy with to finish under one hour.
What would you do differently?:

I think that, as my training increases, running a 10k will feel like a 5k feels now. So I will be able to push it a bit more and maybe/probably get in the low 50´s or high 40´s
Post race
Warm down:

mmm... walk a bit. Tried waiting in line for a massage, but the line was long and it just did not move. I think I did two stretches and ate a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitively need to train more... it will come.

Event comments:

I liked the race and the setting is very nice. I did feel like it could be better organized... specially the after race activities and food. You had to wait in a loooong line to get food. Honestly after three hours of pushing it you don´t want to wait for 30 minutes in line. Same for the massage. It seems that every year they get about the same number of competitors. I am surprised they have not solved those issues. Other than that it was a great race and I had a great time...

Age Group: 0/132
Overall: 526/1062
Performance: Good
Suit: long john
Course: It was a triangle swim. Straight out for the short leg. A right turn on the buoy. The long leg to another right turn and then a shorter return to a left turn that most skipped by the way. It was almost in line with the swim finish, so It did not make too much of a difference, but I was surprised to see most if not all of the waves before us, including pros, skip the last buoy. We did do it... maybe that is why I did not finish in the top 3 ;-)
