Swim
Comments: This was my first half iron distance and I took the swim easy. Heart rate under control coming out of the water. Big hill out of the water to T1. It took me almost 2 minutes to make it to T1. Put on sunscreen before the swim but forget to re-apply after the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Walked with my bike out of T1, not in a hurry it was going to be a long day. The temperature was already getting warm and it was sunny. What would you do differently?: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Bike
Comments: With the heat (100F) on the asphalt and the hills by the end I was ready to get off the bike. I am not the fastest rider usually 18-20 mph on flatter courses so I am happy with the 16mph for my first half iron. What would you do differently?: More hills training and working in the heat. Put on sunscreen before I leave T1. I learned in T2 that my shoulders had burned pretty good. Transition 2
Comments: Put on sunscreen before the run and the sting reminded me that I forget to reapply after the swim. Run
Comments: The run was awful. My legs just would not fire. I assumed that I just had dead legs coming off the bike so I would walk for the first mile and slowly pick up the pace. It was a long day on the run course and for me very little running took place. Basically, I walked the almost the entire course. I wanted to finish before the 8 hour cut off but I also wanted to walk the next day and spend the rest of the day packed in ice and on IV fluids. What would you do differently?: More brick training needs. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Fitness. Event comments: This course is as advertised, rolling hills and the heat will get to you on the run. This not the right course for my first half iron and my fitness level coming off the bike into the run just was not up for this distance. Last updated: 2010-03-23 12:00 AM
