Pre-race routine:

Started in my own bed. how nice. chocked down two bagels and a banana. arrived at 5:50. only a 15 minute drive from home. Set up my transition area. went and got my chip and body mark. looked at swim area. course didn't look as far as I had remembered it in my head. This is my home course and that helped a lot. went back to transition and talked to some friends from my master swim. headed down to beach to get in a warm up.
Event warmup:

none - no sooner had I gotten to beach (about 10 min. before first wave) and they were having everyone get out of the water. I got my googles wet and splashed my face. That was my warm up. So my friend Kyle who said it is really choppy (it was)
Swim

Comments:

because of wind course was quite choppy. I was determined not to be freaked out and just swim. I had this same goal for all my races. The difference here is that it actually worked. I walked into water, instead of sprinting and then started freestyle right away, even when I could have walked. Then I just focused on my stroke. I only did breast stroke for sighting and never kept my head out too long because that seems to increase the chance of swallowing water. I lucked out because I never had to breath into the tide - which would have been a problem. One highlight, I got kicked (hard) in the face - right in the nose - by someone doing the breast stroke in front of me. good news is they didn't knock off my goggles or cause any bleeding. The final leg was didfficult because I was coming right toward the sun and couldn't see very well. The course curved in but many people, including me, seemed to go straight (which was way off course.) I think a actually swam a lot more than the required 440. Everyone was talking about how rough the swim was and I felt absolutely elated when I got out.
What would you do differently?:

go faster. This was the roughest water (and deepest) water I swam in, but it was my best swim by far. It helped that it was my "home" lake where I do almost all my practice OWS. I kept my head in the water which helped, I sang to my self which helped. I was really surprised my time wasn't faster, which is why I think my wayward ways had me going longer. I need to work on speed and navigation. I need to keep working on mental to make sure this is the way from now on. Oh and I need a wetsuit for speed and comfort.
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

time is an estimate because they have not posted any splits. I was right on the end of the rack behind a big sign. I got my feet dried, shirt on and shoes on pretty quick and without issue. however than I couldn't find my watch and spent way to much time looking for it. then I could get my bike wheel over my bag. things were jammed in and I had to move my bad just to get out. The other thing that shocked me was there there were still anumber of bikes on my rack from my wave and even some from the wave before me. Now that was a new feeling.
What would you do differently?:

wear my watch on the swim. not be on the end. otherwise this felt quicker until those issues
Bike
  • 53m 28s
  • 15.7 miles
  • 17.62 mile/hr
Comments:

not as good as I had hoped for. I held back a bit because of the heat and not wanting to blow up on the run. THis course has given me fits all year long as far as speed. This was my fastest on this course this year and was a lit1e faster than last year's time (about a minute and a half) still I wished I would have pushed harder again.
What would you do differently?:

I sound like a broken record. but I need to push harder on the bike. I will give myself a pass for today because of the heat, but I need to break through to the next level. I spent too much time think about the swim on the bike again. This time it was good thoughts but it caused me to lose focus again in the beginning.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

things went pretty well; moved pretty quick. however I looked for my watch again and couldn't find it. Again this time is a total guess because I don't have the split and I had no watch
What would you do differently?:

hve my watch
Run
  • 25m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

first time is an estimate because (stop me if you have heard this before) I don't have split and I had no watch. I was dragging a bit on this one, never really felt in the groove like I had on other runs. I'm guessing my actual time my be a little worse than this and my transitions a little better. tried to drink a little and pour water on me. also had a wet towel I brought and used too. I didn't feel like I had much left in the tank after this run.
What would you do differently?:

train mre in hot conditions. I never cramped or felt dizzy or walked, but did not feel strong. If this would have been a longer distrance I probably would have been in trouble. Take my watch, so I know my stinking pace.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around a little bit, drank and toweled off

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat, not enough confidence that I could push myself in the heat and my old friend genetics (oh don't forget not enough training)

Event comments:

This was supposed to be my "A" race, but turned out to be just a race. Was really pleased with my swim for overcoming the mental issues. A major goal accomplished. I held back because of the heat and my results showed. Still I beat last year's time by 11 minutes, beat 516 others and, most importantly had a blast. I followed Hangloose's advice and stayed to cheer the DFL finisher. As the dwindling crowd cheered her on and gave her high-fives - it reminded me again why I love this sport. It has nothing to do with being on the podium.
