Swim
Comments: Going into the race I had planned (practical goal) 15 min swim, 45 min bike, 30 min run and 5 min total for transitions. The swim is where I thought I would get ahead of my time if I was going to. I also thought that I might be able to shave a couple minutes off of the run to get to my personal goal of 1:30. I was extremely disappointed that they canceled the swim. I felt like I was starting out a leg down, so to speak. What would you do differently?: swim anyway. Transition 1
Comments: none. swim canceled. Bike
Comments: I put up the best bike time I've had (comparing to training). Happy with it. I came out of it well also. Felt like I gave a really good effort and still had my legs under me for the run. A couple of days removed from the race I think I made my best decisions here pretty much by accident. I still had enough energy left to fight the head winds at the end and put in a pretty good run time but I had to push way too hard for the time I put up. I think I was ahead of pace until I hit the head winds, so that's a positive, but for the amount of effort and energy I exerted, I had a pretty crappy time. I attribute part of this to the MTB and part of it to lack of training drills. What would you do differently?: 1) Drink water instead of Gatorade. It was like syrup. Just nasty. 2) ride a road bike. mountain bike is NO GOOD AT ALL. Transition 2
Comments: felt good about my transition. of course I already had my shoes on and there wasn't much for me to do except rack my bike and take my helmet off and go. so pretty straight forward for me. What would you do differently?: run faster, maybe? Run
Comments: did not cramp up like I thought I might which was GREAT. I kept my stride small at first and worked my legs out to running condition. took almost 10 minutes before I was really good though. After that I felt solid on the run. My stomach was a little unsettled. I'll need to work on that in training and get used to taking in gels and liquids while pushing really hard. Didn't do any gels for this one because it's so short but had I needed to, it would have been BAD NEWS for sure. This ended up being a pretty good run for me but it could have been so much better. What would you do differently?: 1) know the course 2) push harder 3) make better decisions Post race
Warm down: none really. walked around for 10 minutes or so. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mountain bike was first thing. I have to drop that puppy. After that, teh bike is my weakest part of the race. I need to find some drills and train with them. Not knowing my distances to the finish or how far I had run. I still had energy left when I finished the run and I could have run harder but was afraid I would peter out before the end. Had I had greater visibility or known the course better, I would have pushed harder at the end. When I saw the finish line and saw that I was going to easily beat my personal goal I didn't push it any harder. There were a variety of poor decisions on the run that were a result of not knowing or being able to gauge my distances. I beat my goal but it was in spite of being poorly prepared instead of because of being well prepared. Had I been well prepared, I could have conceivably taken another minute, maybe even 2 off. BUT this was my first race and I learned a lot about strategy and preparation this race and am VERY VERY happy about it. I set a practical goal and a personal goal(5 minutes faster than the practical) and I beat both, So I'm REALLY happy about that. Event comments: Awesome race, all things considered. I was REALLY disappointed about the swim being canceled. It was a safety measure though and you can't fault them for that. I'm sure there were some people who would have been in deep trouble in those waters. fun party atmosphere afterward. Really well run and organized. Planning on doing it again next year!!!! Can't wait. Last updated: 2010-04-05 12:00 AM

Showered and got everything set up and ready to go the night before. woke up got dressed, brushed teeth and drank some water, put my chip on and grabbed my bag and wife drove me to the event. Drank water, ate a banana, and a pear on the way. traffic was a little heavy so will want to watch out for that in the future. put wheel on bike and brakes were rubbing against the wheel. left it that way and rode with it like that. There was a lot less room than I thought at the transition station. may not want to carry as big a back pack as I did. setting up transition was simple but took longer than I thought it would. arriving an hour before is JUST enough time. may want more time for other events.
swam a few yards for the warm up. practiced sighting a little. very simple. got used to water. swim was canceled so the walk back and forth was the warm up for me.
