Overcast
Total Time = 1h 49m 35s
Overall Rank = 219/233
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 12/13
Pre-race routine:

Spent the day at parents house. Up around 5AM. Rough night / not much sleep.
Event warmup:

Stretched bit, about 1/4 mile jog, about 25m swim.
Swim
  • 29m 30s
  • 500 yards
  • 05m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Crash and burn. First OWS and was simply not physically strong enough. Had to flip on back about 75m in. At about 150m had to rest for first time. Ended up resting 4-5 times. Swimming on back would not work as waves kept being swallowed. Cramped badly with 50m left. Overall a very ugly performance that wiped me out for the entire event.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get in the pool and work on form massively. Prior to race had "muscled" 1000m workouts. Was basically worthless today.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Transition was very slow -- walked through in zombie state as I was totally gassed. Did have things well prepared/organized.
What would you do differently?:

For transition, not much. Good job preparing and laying out area.
Bike
  • 45m 14s
  • 12 miles
  • 15.92 mile/hr
Comments:

With being gassed, took it nice and easy on the ride. Around 1/2 way felt pretty good; however, at turn around went straight back in to wind! Did keep cadence solid and did OK.
What would you do differently?:

Need to train more intensely to handle the demands of the bike after the swim. Did keep my cool and hold cadence -- nice job adjusting and not trying to be a hero
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Took it nice and easy in prep for run. Again, had organized well / was "easy".
What would you do differently?:

Maybe practice a bit more, but not much different.
Run
  • 30m 39s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Coming out of T2 was feeling poorly, but legs were OK. Settled in to what I felt was my 10 minute pace and was spot on. Actually believe I negative split each mile. Pleased that I kept my head and actually turned in a time that was reasonable.
What would you do differently?:

All in the training -- need to work both more distance and more intensity.
Post race
Warm down:

Nice easy walk to catch breath. Recovered very quickly -- but was hurting pretty bad for first 30 seconds.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor conditioning on swim. Plus lack of distance base on bike/run. Interval work would have helped with speed, but base lacking was big issue.

Event comments:

Race is very nice -- course is pleasant with lots of shade / gentle hills. I'll be back next year to redeem myself!
