Swim
Comments: First ever open water swim. Stayed to the left and had a good line to the first bouy. Tried to draft a little bit, but every person I found was slower, so I ended up passing some people. What would you do differently?: I could have gone a little harder, but not bad for my first race. Transition 1
Comments: My first transition went well. I practiced a bit on the previous weekend by using rubber bands with my shoes clipped in. Worked well. What would you do differently?: I probably could have been about tens seconds quicker, but it was my first transition ever - always room for improvement. Bike
Comments: Overall good pace - could have probably been 1/2 mph quicker, but wanted to pace myself. Got passed by two people and passed about 10. Was in 10th place overall going into T2. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder on the hills. Getting some aero wheels would help- used my 28mm aero-bladed wheels. Transition 2
Comments: Jumped off bike a bit too quick - one of my shoes hit the ground a flew off - a volunteer grabbed it for me. No socks saved time - grabbed a small water bottle, hat on, and out to course. What would you do differently?: nothin Run
Comments: Course was not marked correctly. I quickly passed the person in front of me - now in 9th place overall. I was following the lead pack of runners and we all missed a left turn because there was no volunteer or sign marking where to turn. As a result I ran 5 miles instead of 4 (4.98 on my Garmin 305). My average pace was 6:48/mile, but with the extra mile that put me at 34 minutes instead of 27:10. I would have been top ten overall instead of 18th. GRRRRRR!!!!!! Pushed to the end and still felt pretty good - upset at the course setup, though. What would you do differently?: Run the right course and know the course ahead of time - should have done my homework. Post race
Warm down: Walked around finish area, grabbed a few drinks, and had a bagel. Wife congratulate me on my first career triathlon. What limited your ability to perform faster: The mismarked course killed me! I'll know the course if I do the race next year. Event comments: I contacted the race director and he is comping me entry into another of their races due to the mismarking on the run course. I realize there should have been a volunteer on the corner, but it was a pretty big mistake. About 12 athletes were affected by this mistake, and lots of people took spots on the podium from those like me that ran an extra mile. Last updated: 2010-05-11 12:00 AM

Up at 3:50, breakfast of cornflakes, blueberries, strawberries and glass of OJ. On the road by 4:25.
Almost hit a deer on the highway, which didn't help for my first triathlon ever!
Quick 10 minute swim after setting up transition. First OWS and felt pretty good in the wetsuit.
