Swim
Comments: Overall the swim was good. Going through the entire series I really had to re-learn how to swim in a wetsuit. During the sprint I had a very difficult time swimming in the wetsuit. As I got further through the season I adjusted fitting and got very comfortable in it. I felt good coming out of the water and ready for the bike. Transition 1
Comments: Transition was good. I took my time and made sure I had everything for the bike. Bike
Comments: I was surprised during the bike. I had originally based my goal time on training rides. I really thought I would avg 16-17mph and finishing around 3:30. The course was much faster than I had anticipated which turned out to be great. During the first loop on Hwy 36 I did see Craig Alexander out for a training run. That was pretty cool. It was also great to see so many volunteers out there with so much energy. They truly made this a first class experience. What would you do differently?: I should have rode the course onece before the race. I had done the sprint and peak and figured I was comfortable with the area. Transition 2
Comments: This was a bit slower. Forgot a couple of things and had to go back to transition area to make sure I had everything. Stopped by the portapot. Run
Comments: As I started the run, all I could think of was...here we go. I don't know what was more challenging the mental or physical aspect. The first loop was good because there were alot of runners still out on the course. As I got to the second loop it got very lonely out there. At one point I dropped my sponge as I bent down to pick it up, I really felt the tingle in the hamstrings. All I could think was 67 miles down, 3 to go. Again it was the volunteers at the aid stations that got me through. They were very helpful and encouraging. What would you do differently?: more run training in the heat. Post race
Warm down: After crossing the finish line, found my wife and headed to the food tent. Had a subway, orange soda, and sat down in the shade for a bit. After cooling down I headed over to the beer garden and enjoyed a well deserved brew. Event comments: This was my first HIM. Back in October I signed up for the series and started my true training on February 8th. I had printed the Ironman Boulder 70.3 logo and put it in my work notebook to continually remind myself of what was ahead. Through the training of long bike rides and runs it turned into a way for me to rediscover who I was. In a way I learned to test myself, what my limits were and what I was capable of. The other major contributor was this website. I never could have done this without the guidance, advice, and stories from every triathlete on this website. So Thank You to BeginnerTriathlete. Woke up at 4:00am. Had some cereal, oatmeal, coffee, and a granola bar. Got the car loaded up and set off. I left my house in Westminster and headed up 287 until I hit Hwy 52. As I got to the top of Hwy 52 looking down into Boulder I could see a small string of lights heading into the Boulder Reservoir.
Got my transition area setup and headed out for a small jog. Got back to transition area, got wetsuit cap and goggles.
