Pre-race routine:

First Olympic distance race. Ate a banana and half a bagel. Cycled to start area from hotel. Setup, ate a mini power bar, hit the restroom and wriggled into my wetsuit.
Event warmup:

not much, as usual. late getting started on walk to swim start, had to fast walk to make it in time. i guess that was my warmup. didn't have time to get in water beforehand.
Swim
  • 45m 43s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

felt like i was going very slowly and zig-zagging. found out after the swim it wasn't just me. the current was running strong against us making for a hard slog. and the bouys had moved a bit during the night accounting for the feeling of zig-zagging.
What would you do differently?:

felt i did well considering the conditions. new wetsuit was a big help. actually came out of the water in AG 4th. nothing different.
Transition 1
  • 04m 57s
Comments:

new wetsuit came off pretty easy, no issues there. forgot to tuck gu gel in my pocket.
What would you do differently?:

remember to take nutrition on the bike. that really hurt me later.
Bike
  • 1h 40m 23s
  • 29 miles
  • 17.33 mile/hr
Comments:

fast pace until i hit the section with the headwinds the second time. i did make my pre-race goal of under 1:45. was pacing much faster on first lap. lost about 5-6 minutes in the 2nd lap over the 1st.
What would you do differently?:

major mistake was not taking the fresh bottle at the bottle exchange. ran out of water late. left me dehydrated for the run. this along with the no gu mistake did not set myself up well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

slow for me, usual is about a minute.
What would you do differently?:

not be so tired. eat the gu you left the first time idiot!
Run
  • 1h 13m 56s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

what can i say - it was my first Olympic and i was hot, dehydrated and tired by this point. worst time ever for 10K. used combo of walk/run. probably walked around 3/4 of a mile total, slow run for rest. 2 waters at every stop, one to drink and one to pour over me.
What would you do differently?:

train more for endurance. i didn't have anything left at this point.
Post race
Warm down:

sat down and drank lots and ate a bagel and some cheese.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

really lost momemtum starting with about 5 miles left on the bike. the run was slow and painful. need to train for more endurance if i'm gonna do more longer races.

Event comments:

My first experience at an Olympic distance. the first time is always the hardest. i'll try it again, i'm betting i can do better.
