Pre-race routine:

Bagel-banana-drive to race. Set up transition area, warmed-up, met up with AjFreddy and possie to wait for start time.
Event warmup:

Took bike out for a spin around the park.
Swim
  • 05m 54s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really short swim. In a shallow man-mage "lake". First third or so was running in the shallow end. Googles didn't seal well so sighting was bad. Drifted off course and swam a little past the turnaround. Hadn't swam in over a week so couldn't quite find the swimming groove. In fact technique wa incredible poor. Finally got into the swim for the return leg, but was soon in the shallow end again and ran out. But no matter how bad I did the couse was so short, the difference between bad and good was only measured in seconds, not minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Get more recent swim time in. Figure out the google issue.
Transition 1
  • 04m 35s
Comments:

Can't figure out where the time ent. Time inlude a ~60 yd beach dash, but time is still twice as long as anyone else. Yes, I put on the bike shoes and then run the bike out, but the bike exit was only about 10 yards away from bike rack. Putting on socks must have burned up alot of time.
What would you do differently?:

Start training without socks and see how that goes.
Bike
  • 53m 32s
  • 16.75 miles
  • 18.77 mile/hr
Comments:

This leg went really well. I was hoping to break 18 mph for this race and really did much better than that. No real big hills. Stayed mostly in the big chainring the whole way. Even had enough breath to thank some volunteers along the way.
Seeing that Amanda (AjFreddy) had left T1 2+ min ahead of me every time Isaw a group aof riders ahead of me I thought to myself that see must be up there so that gave me the imputious to push to catch them. But she wouldn't be in that group so pick the next group to catch. (not that I was racing anybody or anything as I was only trying to better myself and all that)
I finished the bike feeling fairly well, my legs still felt ready for the run, unlike last months Du. So this was a vast improvement.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Train more, get faster.

And even though I take my frame pump off for racing, I should throw it in my transition bag, because you never know who may forget to pump up their tires before the race. Not thinking of anyone in particular, I just sayin.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Went fairly smoothly, but still pretty slow. Without triathlon bike shoes I don't think I'll be improving this very much.
Run
  • 26m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

OK, either the course was short or I had a really good run as this time is a PR by 47 seconds from two months ago.

Past Pseudoyams (Rob)on the way back pretty soon after I left T2, damn he's fast.

After passing the 1 mile mark, saw Amanda coming back from the turnaround, so I picked up my pace as much I could (not that I was racing anybody or anything as I was only trying to better myself and all that)

On the way into the park, past Heather on her way out, Way to chipper for someone in the run segment of her first triathlon.
What would you do differently?:

Only alot more training will make me any faster here, or maybe a car.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some fruit and water at the finish line. Met up with amanda and cheered on some more finishers while waiting for her freinds to come in. Then cracked open some Guinesses with Amanda and went to the awards.

Eventuallt we packed up our transition areas and then it was beer and brats with Amanda and her posse, and Jim (jmwebs), Good times just relaxing in the park, while Amanda's parents did all the work. Spent more time talking about triathlon than actually doing one.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can't completely turn around 30 years of sloth with nine months of training, but it's getting better.

Event comments:

Great race for a beginner, small and fairly flat, well organized with lots of volunteers. Had a blast. Can't wait for the next one.

I took the data for the 35-45 YO males and compared how I did.
swim 33/51; T1 49/51; Bike 34/51; T2 42/51; run 43/51; OA 39/51
No real suprises, run needs the most work. T1 needs to improve. Swim was really too unusual to draw too firm of a conclusion.
