Swim
Comments: Despite all my swimming practice it just didn't translate well to open water. I was pleased that I didn't panic at all, but really couldn't get into any rhythm doing crawl with breathing. Switched to slow and steady side-stroke. Almost exactly same time as last year's race. What would you do differently?: More open water swims. Transition 1
Comments: Minor problem finding my bike as I initially tried to enter the other side of the TZ. Got suit off fairly easily, dried a bit, bike shoes/helmet/sunglasses on and headed out. What would you do differently?: I guess more rehearsal about which direction I would be coming from after the swim. I had done this once. Bike
Comments: This was a fabulous bike for me, my best yet. It was a fast and easy course and I was pleased with the number of folks I was able to pass. Much of the course was on newly paved road where I felt very comfortable on my aero bars, but a bit was still under construction with a thick lip on the edge where I saw two crashes. This needs to be better marked. Last year I did this same course in :48, so a 5 minute improvement! What would you do differently?: Nothing, just try to do it again in July! Transition 2
Comments: No major problems, found my rack easily. Running shoes, hat, racebelt on quickly then off I went. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I am a very slow runner. I've worked on it, but remain slow. Wasn't overly tired and legs felt pretty good. No cramping like my last race. Last year I did this in :41 so some improvement, but not much. What would you do differently?: I'm unsure. Even in training I'm usually at about 11 min/mi so I think 12 is probably my pace after a swim and bike. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit. The post-race food didn't look very appetizing to me, but I did get some vendor samples and then broke-down transition area (note: wet wetsuits are rather heavy), shoved everything back into my backpack and biked back to my car to arrive late at my friends for a full-day of scrapbooking. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of open water swim practice. Lack of any sort of running ability. Event comments: A fun, fast course. The horrid rain that Oregon has had the past few weeks/months made parking very challenging and led to the somewhat late start. Last updated: 2010-05-26 12:00 AM

Packed the night before unsure if I was actually going to do the race. It has been raining for weeks here. I awoke to the delightful sound of silence with a noticable lack of pounding rain on the roof. Got up, ate some cereal, drove to the race. Put on my pack and biked to set up transition.
Rather chilly so got in the warmer water with a friend to wait for the slightly late start.
