Swim
Comments: The water temp was wetsuit legal but didn't consider it too much since it's only 300m. Though after standing around for 20 minutes after my warm-up swim, I was pretty chilly. Ended up being a great swim. I was on the outside left up front and focused on sprinting the first 75 yards to avoid the masses. Managed to do that and saw that I was swimming with about 6 people from our group. We all stuck relatively close together. Ran into the earlier wave of backstrokers with about 50 yards to go. Based on John's call, I was 4th out of the water in the 30-39 wave. Goal was in the 4:45 range with a 1:35/100m pace and I met that goal. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Stoke work and extra yardarge are beginning to pay off. Transition 1
Comments: Got through transition quickly but the bike mount was pretty narrow and wasn't able to run through it. As I hopped on my bike I knocked my water bottle out of my Xlab and turned around to pick it up. At that point I was already over the mounting line and this was added to my bike time so tack on 10+ seconds there. Bike
Comments: Hammered this as hard as possible. Didn't really care about the run. Hit maximum speed of 29.2 and was averaging 25-27 for the first 3 miles but couldn't keep that up. Average 24s most of the rest of the way. I passed one person in my age group and dozens not in my age group. Didn't get passed once on the bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing except changing my drink set-up. Beyond knocking my bottle out at T1...I tried drinking from a bottle but couldn't get comfortable and was breathing so hard in aero position it was a total waste....fluids all over my arms. Use the aerodrink bottle during sprints from now on. Transition 2
Comments: Wasn't ready for transition when it came up...it was right after a right turn. Actually took one foot out of the pedals and came to a complete stop before getting the other one out. Ran with shoes on to my rack. No problems finding my rack. Transitions were overall good in this race. In AG, I was 6th and 7th in T1 and T2, respectively. Kept the transition mat as simple as possible; especially in a sprint...race belt, helmet, glasses, hat, running shoes and disposable bottle of fluids for the run. The rest goes in the backpack. I think my transition times were pretty solid looking at others in different AGs. What would you do differently?: Pay closer attention to the bike in/dismount line before the race. Run
Comments: Probably the best run of the year. Started out and my lungs were hurting a little bit. I picked up the pace as I was closing in on Mile 1 because there was an older guy running singing something. I'm not sure what he was singing or if it was even English. Thought he might be crazy so I hustled past him. I'm pretty sure he was part of the Texas Senior Games group. I figured I would be getting passed sometime soon so I kept the pace up just below 7:00 pace. I was tired and was focused on just not blowing up. I thought there might be a few people in my AG ahead of me and wasn't looking to pass anybody but was hoping to not get passed. The only reason I can consider this my best run of the year was because at mile 2 marker I was caught by runner in may AG. He wasn't blazing like what happend in September at Houston Triathlon, so I stuck on his shoulder for the remainder of the run. When we hit the grass with 100 yards to go, we both turned it on. The ground was torn up and I was expecting to fall or turn my ankle but was lucky enough to stay upright and hold him off...taking 1st in the AG by less 4 seconds. I felt redeemed a bit after losing a podium place on Tejas and in Houston Triathlon all because of my run. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Avoided dying. My lungs were on fire and my heart was nearly out of my chest at the finish. Sat around for about 5 minutes before moving. Then I stood around and talked with John, Bryan, Mike and other until they left and then floated solo until awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not sure. I could always be a faster runner. Weighing in at 200 lbs pre-race. Event comments: Great event. Well organized, good course, good size, and good volunteers. Love double-dave's pizza. Good raffle prizes even though I didn't win. I really like this super-sprint distance. Great weather. Last updated: 2010-05-26 12:00 AM

Mowed the lawn on Saturday and while filling up the lawnmower with gas, I roll my ankle. I was standing there, not moving and all of a sudden I'm limping into the house. Not a bad sprain but enough to where I need to go inside and ice it down. WTF? Could have taken it as an omen, but I loaded up on advil and took it easy for the rest of the day (after finishing the lawn). Went to Chuy's ate chips and queso and fish tacos...not the best pre-race dinner...Couldn't get to sleep afterwards and was up past 12:30.
Got up at 4:30 after 4 hours sleep, ate a bagel w/ PB and drank some mountain dew. Sipped on 10 oz of EFS orange drink mixed with EFS vanilla gel before the race finishing it with 10 minutes before the wave start.
Ran a mile to test the ankle...no problem. Saw some friends, hung out in transition and then swam a few hundred yards and then hung out talking to Bryan, John, Mike....waiting for the race to start.
NOTE: Official times were off when I wrote this race report...said I swam the 300m in 3:17 and I'm nearly positive that the 30-29 wave was a minute short on the swim so my time of 50:34 was likely 51:34 so not 12 overall but maybe 19th.
