Pre-race routine:

Spent the night in Roswell at Super 9.
Up at 6:00, usual pre-race breakfast and stretching.
got to venue at about 7:25 (just a little late)
Event warmup:

Set up transition, get body marked, and take a short spin on the bike (5 min) just to make sure everything was working. Put wetsuit on just before our wave was called. It was already getting hot, but I was glad I had the wetsuit on when we got in the water. -- it really wasn't needed, but I feel like it's good practice.
Swim

  • 547 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Nice little swim. I eased up just at the very end so I wouldn't be out of breath getting out of the water. Pace was good. This was my first wetsuit swim of the year, and the wetsuit felt tight on my arms. Just tried to relax and swim. Felt pretty good. Not too hard, not too easy.
I went a little far on the turn around.
What would you do differently?:

Train a bit more for the shorter event. Watch for the turn bouy
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

For the first time ever, my wetsuit stuck on one of my heels. I was pretty quick, but forgot to put my riding gloves on the bike, rather than in my helmet where I usually keep them. It took a few seconds extra to put them on over wet hands. Works better for me to ride out, then put them on while on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

If I had known I was going to the race I would have practiced transitions.
Practice wetsuit. Put golves on bike instead of in helmet.

Comments:

I went out just a little hard. I rode on the edge of LT pretty much the whole route. I think I would have done better starting a little easier. I had to back off just a little several times to let my legs rest. If I can beat 38 minutes I pass all but three competitors. I passed three folks right out of T1. Then no one passed me untill the turn around. I need to work on short distance strength and pace. I felt strong going up the hill, and stood a couple of times.

Sort of ran out of steam legs wise on the way back in. (perhaps a gel?) I can ride harder than that, just didn't today.
What would you do differently?:

Easier at first.

The fastest guy was 7 minutes faster than me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

3rd in age group. I had my shoes burried and facing the wrong way which took a few seconds to rectify. Forgot to take my riding gloves off. :)
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions. Silly mistakes due to not rehearsing.

I didn't know I was going to the race till two days beforehand.
Run
  • 30m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

I kept my cadence up from the start. The gravel in places was pretty rough, but I'm getting used to it. I love running in my VFF's. Felt strong throughout the race. Dumping water on myself at the aide stations helped. I walked each aide station, and took a gel at the second one. The gel really helped, so perhaps I should have taken it earlier.

It was hot.

I picked up the pace with about 1/2 mile to go. And at the end the high school racers were cheering for Luke, who I could tell was somewhere right on my tail. So for the last couple hundred yards it was all out.

I should have picked up the pace earlier. Achiles felt fine, although they were sore later in the day.

Overall I felt pretty good about the run. I'm learning and getting better, and learning to run in the five fingers.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace at ~ 1 mile out, and run just a little faster.

Train to run faster longer.
Post race
Warm down:

drink water, eat ice cream. LOTS of ice cream.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training speed

Event comments:

I like the varied run course. I enjoy the bike course and scenery in spite of a fairly rough surface. The post race activites are good, and I really like the ICE CREAM. Lots of folks stick around and there's time for socializing. Everyone is very friendly.

Good race
