Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00 a.m. Drank coffee and ate a banana and bagel with peanut butter. Left the house at 5:00 as it was an hour drive away.
Event warmup:

Set up and found my friend who was meeting us there. (It was my daughter and I doing this tri together.) Walked down to the swim site. It was quite a ways away, maybe a third of a mile. Then ran back up as a warm up. Walked down again. Swam out and back a bit, probably not more than 150 yds.
Swim
  • 12m 53s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim time isn't very accurate because they included the run-to-transition time in it. By my watch, I finished about 9 minutes and started the run to transition. It was frustrating getting back to transition because spectators were strolling along in the way and people in previous waves were in the way. At one point, going up a bunch of stairs there was no way to get around the slow pokes!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe warm up a little bit more, and definitely increase my endurance in practice. I got a bit tired about 3/4 of the way. But overall, I was pretty pleased. I was in front of most of the people in my wave. My husband said that they only reason anyone in my wave came in ahead of me was because people just stood up and walked out at the end and cut off the final bouy!
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

I was pretty happy with my transition time. Many people were getting on their bikes in the transition zone! It was chaotic trying to keep from getting run over! I didn't mount my bike until the mount area though.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster to the mount area (hopefully people won't be in the way on their bikes next time)!
Bike
  • 54m 41s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 13.64 mile/hr
Comments:

I live in Florida and don't have any hills to train on. This was a very difficult course for me! Also, I rode a mountain bike so the times weren't as good as I could have done if I had a road bike. Overall, though given this fact, I was pretty pleased with my time. Especially since I don't train on hills at all and ended up losing about 2 minutes because of walking at the end of an extremely long hill.
What would you do differently?:

Go to more spinning classes which might simulate hills so that I'm stronger. Hopefully eventually I'll get a road bike. My daughter, who rides a road bike, and started in the wave behind me, caught me at the very end of the ride and passed me. I also need to practice getting on the bike quicker!
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Again, people were cruising in on their bikes right into the transition zone. It was a mess! Then when I took off on the run, there was a spectator who crossed my path to get a picture of someone coming in on her bike!! My daughter said I should have just run her over! It was fun seeing my grandchildren cheering behind the fence, "go mamaw!"
What would you do differently?:

Get going a little faster.
Run
  • 40m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

This was really hard for me since I don't train on any hills. The entire course was up and down hills. I eventually caught back up to my daughter (who had gotten out of transition ahead of me), and we ran/walked together most of the way. Then at the end, I tried to catch someone who had been playing "catch" with me the entire way on the bike and now the run. My daughter got left a bit behind at the end. She still ended up beating me by one minute though even though she started after me in the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice on the treadmill with an incline. Also need to increase my distances to build up my endurance. I had wanted to run the entire way, but those hills killed me. Didn't even come close to running the entire way!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a lot to work out cramps in legs from those hills. Drank water and had some fruit and a coke to get the sugar in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The hills are really all that kept me from doing better. But given the difficulty of the hills and the fact that I rode a mtb, I was pretty pleased with my overall performance.

Event comments:

The race itself was great. I had fun doing it with my daughter. BUT it was poorly organized. There were no instructions for first-timers thus people riding their bike in the transition zone and getting out of the water cutting off before the bouy! There was no drink station at the half way point on the run. They did not give caps to people for the swim. For a first-time race, there needed to be more support. Despite that, I'll do it again next year for the my-next-tri because my son wants to do the my-first-tri next year. I had read race reports with the above complaints so I was prepared with my own fuel belt for the run.
