Pre-race routine:

Terrible- Drove from Calgary in AM. Had a Tim's Coffee and a breakfast muffin. Didn't hydrate or eat another bite until after a swim in the lake, checking into the hotel, going to the pre race meeting, and finally realizing I was setting up for a bad day. Anyway, grabbed take out from East Side Marios, went back to the hotel and scarfed down pasta @9:00 (13 hrs after my last meal) and drank about 50 gallons of water in a panic.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the water and got used to the idea of a wetsuit. Did a few strokes and felt good.

Comments:

This is certainly my weakest sport. This was my first open water swim using a freestyle stroke, and wetsuit. My swimming has come along well, and I felt good, but my navigation was pathetic. If this was a slalom course I would've appeared to be doing great. I was swimming outside the safety boats at one point. Just completely lost!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I know I need work on navigation, but I felt like this was a good overall effort and my swimming was reasonable. I am not going to beat myself up, as again, this was a first use of freestyle for me, in open water. I will take it.

Comments:

Wetsuit strippers did an awesome job. Got to the bike, ready to go. Ran to the line in barefeet, and got onto the bike. first shoe came off the pedal almost immediately. Jumped off and put the shoe on. One revolution and the other shoe came off. Got out of the way and put the shoes on, jumped on the bike and got out of there.
What would you do differently?:

Well, I would prefer not to have my shoes kick off. I am on Speedplays, so leaving the shoes in the pedals works well, but I need to work a bit more on executing this properly.

Comments:

Organizers did a fantastic job making sure the course was prime. Car traffic was light, and the shoulders were in great shape. All turn-arounds were well staged and I felt safe for the duration.

Stayed in aero position for pretty much the whole time. Had a few sips of water from the front bottle and had a powergel that was taped to my top tube.

I wiggled my speed sensor before the day started, and the wireless system would not pair up. I had planned on using the "Time Trial" timer, which worked great on a training ride, but the computer shut off after a few minutes. So I just went by feel.

Cervelo P2SL (Stock all around)
What would you do differently?:

Know the course better. When I hit the entrance to the park, I went into "getting ready for the run mode" and it ended up being longer than I thought. I could've burned through more of the Wasa Lake Road if I had planned it better.

I probably should have drank more, but I did fine without.

Comments:

Took the time to get socks. No real issues here. I was not super fast, but not slow either.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much.

Comments:

A good run overall. I think I managed it well, and found it good. I hit a great stride at 4km, but it did not stay for the duration of the run. Found myself holding back quite a bit, because I did not know how I was going to do for the whole distance. Sprinted to the finish, last 200 or so meters.

Had one cup of water on the run course. I did not really feel like I wanted/ needed more.

Adidas Ozweego
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace earlier. I had way too much juice left at the end, so I think I could've pushed harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some snacks and hung out with the wife and kids before making the trek back to Calgary.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not really knowing the course
Pre race nutrition (likely)
Poor navigation in the water

Event comments:

Overall, a great race. The race happened on-time, but the pre race meeting was late. I had my wife and 2 kids under 3 with me and we wanted to get the info and get out of there. This was a bit annoying.
Escaping from the course was not that easy, but it was understandable due to the quality of the run segment. Wife said being a spectator was difficult (with a stroller). This could be our fault (not knowing the course, and new to the sport).
