Swim
Comments: Counldn't have picked a better day to have a race. Too bad my body didn't seem to want to race. I started out in the back knowing that I was not one of the faster swimmers. About 100m in I knew things were not going to go very well in the water. I couldn't catch my breath my HR was through the roof and I was having problems just getting into any groove. At about 200m I decided that I would backstroke until I got my breathing under control again. I unzipped my suit to help me breath which helped a bit. About 150m before the end I was finally able to roll over and freestyle again. I think my mass fail was related to me not having any elevation training but mostly not being really prepared for the swim. What would you do differently?: The only thing that went right was that my goggles didnt leak. So I guess everything else starting at day one of training. Transition 1
Comments: This went well considering the swim sucked so bad. It took a little to get my head cleared but I was able to jog to my area. I stopped and took a second or two to make sure I had everything I needed before I left. What would you do differently?: Try to go a little faster. Practice a little more so it is just natural instead of having to think my way through. Bike
Comments: I had been trianing on roads that were similar in elevation changes to this except for the one hill. I was able to pass a lot of people and made up some of the time lost from the swim. My goal was 40mins and since I had never actually done that fast for this distance I was very surprised to see the 37min split. Was able to get up to almost 35mph on the short steep hill on the way out. Dropped me to 11moh on the way back thoug. One of the guys in the 40-44 group and I passed each other like five or six times but could never break away. was able to swing my leg over the bike and do a running dismount which worked perfectly. What would you do differently?: Make sure PC is working before one mile in. Learn how to start and finish with shoes clipped in. Press lap button coming into transition. Transition 2
Comments: The only thing that slowed me down a little here was practice and putting my socks on. I have never been able to not sit down while I put them on without falling over so instead of falling down possibly taking a few grand of bikes with me to the ground I just sat down out of everyone elses way and rolled them on. Family was right by the transition area so they were cheering me on which helped. What would you do differently?: Learn how to stand and put on socks. Press lap button on going out of transition Run
Comments: Started off a little slower then I wanted to with a bunch of left hip pain. I knew that this would go away since it happens on a lot of my runs so I just kept going. I knew that meeting my goal time for the race 1:30 would be next to impossible unless I ran sub 20min I decided to just have a a good time and chat it up with the other racers. I was able to talk with Meg(megatrow) for a bit. About 400m before the end I kicked it up a bit to finish strong. IF I had known how close to beating 1:40 I was I think I would have started going a bit earlier. This was about my normal run time so not really any surprises here. What would you do differently?: Start kick earlier. When dumping water on head actually hit head not side of shoulder. Post race
Warm down: Walked around found food talked with family and friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training, Training, Training. Maybe some altitude but mostly training. Event comments: Since this was my first I really don't have anything to compare it too. The meeting on Saturday was helpful. The coarse was well laid out with enough volunteers. The barriers out of transition should have been farther apart to help traffic flow. There seemed like enough food to go around. I plan on doing this again next year. The scenery make this race. I can't imagine racing on a more beautiful coarse. Last updated: 2010-06-15 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:15 at some cereal and OJ. Since this was my first race I got there plenty early to select what I thought would be a good spot. Set up my stuff. Walked around a bit talking to some people I had met the day before. Enjoyed the cool morning air and the chaos that was happening all around me.
Walked from transition area to swim start. Splashed some water on my face.
