Swim
Comments: I was happy with my performance in the pool. I wasn't passed by anyone, and actually passed two people in the swim. I had a friend time me in the 250 the week before & I was almost a minute faster today than I was then. What would you do differently?: Get to the pool a little earlier and get a few warm up laps in so I wouldn't be so nervous. Felt the nerves building until I got in the pool, but once I started swimming, I was ok. Transition 1
Comments: I had not done any rides without socks, so with wet feet putting socks on took a little longer than I wanted. I wanted to try and make sure I had plenty of fluid on my ride so I drank some Gatorade G2 while in transition. Forgot to put my Garmin 205 on before I left T1 and it fell off at the mount line. A volunteer picked it up and put it on my mat in transition. What would you do differently?: Train on rides without socks to eliminate that hassle during transition, and make sure my Garmin 205 is either on my wrist when I leave T1 or on my mat, not on the aerobars. Bike
Comments: Apparently I should have taken some more Gatorade G2 in T1, because my right calf cramped a litte on the ride. Drank some G2 from my aerobottle and it went away. The course roads were relatively smoothe except for the railroad crossing, and the bridge joints. Good course though. What would you do differently?: Take in more salts prior to the race so that I wouldn't have cramped on the bike ride. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was ok. What would you do differently?: Try to learn to undo my shoes coming in on the bike, so I don't have to do it in T2. Run
Comments: My right calf started cramping a little just out of T2 a little water and that eased up for me. Both of my quads began cramping just after mile 1, and began to hurt pretty bad. They felt like my muscles were balling up in my legs. Thanks to the next two aid stations and plenty of water from them and they eased up enough for me to finish the race. Not used to my feet swelling while running and my toes began to go numb at about 2 miles in, because of my laces too tight apparently. What would you do differently?: I definitely need to do some more run training, and even practice running off the bike to work on getting over the bike legs you get while riding. RUN, RUN, RUN... Post race
Warm down: My daughter was waiting for me for the last couple of hundred yards, and ran in with me. That made me happy, and spent some time with her and wife, had a few orange slices, couple of bottles of water, and did some stretching to loosen all those muscles I had just tightened up. What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to do more bricks, and loosen my shoes a little so that maybe my feet won't go to sleep on me while running and cause me pain. I need to take more salts in pre-race so that I don't deplete them before I need them in the later stages. Event comments: I liked this event, it was my first but won't be my last, & I will definitely run it again next year. The organizers at FSSERIES.com put on a good event, and the town of Smithfield really made this event a good event. Last updated: 2010-06-21 12:00 AM

Woke up early, gave wife and kids a kiss goodbye, ate a bagel with PB and Banana, and some water. When I arrived in Smithfield I drank one Strawberry Gatorade G1 shake. Checked in got marked and began setting up my transition area. Being my first race I was a little nervous and moved a little slower to make sure I got everything done and was ready to start the race.
Was unsure if the pool area was available for warm up because of my first race. Did some stretching around my transition area.
