Swim
Comments: Overall, I was happy with my swim. I started in the front of my wave. Tried to start Garmin when horn went off, but wasnt sure it started (didnt hear a beep) so stopped to quickly look and press start again. It wasnt started so glad I checked. Moved out front quickly and steered to the left to avoid any faster swimmers. I really didnt want to get swum over. Felt a few people hit my feet on occasion, but nothing too bad. I think staying left and getting out quick helped. Water got shallow on way in and many people started to run, but swimming proved to be faster as I passed a few more people who were trying to run. Did dolphin dives closer to shore which worked well. What would you do differently?: start watch before horn. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was just ok. It was a long run from the swim exit to the bike. I bypassed the wetsuit strippers, but I think I will use them next time. I watched them do this for the half on Sunday and saw how fast it is. I just worry about them ripping my wetsuit. Took wetsuit off, put on socks, cycling shoes and race belt and glasses. Left T1. Had a good bike mount and got up to speed quickly. Saw a lot of people trying to mount the bike with shoes attached to pedals. I dont think it saves enough time for Age Grouper to warrant this, especially after watching everyone. What would you do differently?: use wetsuit strippers Bike
Comments: My plan was to go all out the whole way and I attacked on first hill to get up to speed. Felt really good and passed a lot of people. Continued fast pace and attacks on hills. Recovery on downhills. Near the turn around I started playing cat and mouse with a few guys on Tri bikes. I would pass them on the way up and they pass me on the way down. I started to spin out on the downhills at around 38mph so couldnt reallly go any faster than that. I need to look into getting a new cassette for next time. I currently have a compact with 12x25 and I think having an 11 would help a lot. I forgot about the no pass zone and was stuck behind a few slower riders. Overall I was happy with my bike, especially since I was on a rode bike with no aero bars. What would you do differently?: not much. Look into getting a 11x26 cassette. Transition 2
Comments: Took feet out of shoes while coasting to the dismount line. jumped off bike and ran to my spot. Put on running shoes and put gel in back pocket just in case (never used it). Started to leave and realized I still had my helmet on so had to run back. Transition shoot was long and not really sure where it officially ended (where timing strip was). Not great, but not bad. What would you do differently?: remember to take off helmet. Run
Comments: Really stiff for first mile. Calf's were also cramping a bit. Probably didnt drink enough on the bike. Grabbed a Gatorade at the turnaround, but they fill the cup too much so poured some out first. I also have a hard time drinking while running, especially if I am pushing it. Felt better after the turn and started to pick up the pace. My goal was to be under 8 min/mile and didnt think I was going to do it. I didnt feel like I was running that great so I was shocked when I saw my time. The course must shorter than 3 mi. I looked at my Garmin and it showed a pace of 7:42 and 2.7 miles (but I didnt start it exactly at the Transition line. It was also demoralizing to be passed by a 12 year old. He was fast though (or maybe I am just a slow runner). I know running is not be best event. What would you do differently?: drink more on bike. Work on more running. Running is definitely my limiter. Post race
Warm down: drank water and walked around to cool down. Event comments: Overall it was a good race. I may do it again next year. But was a little disappointed with the free swag in the race bag - mine just had a box of Wheaties Fuel and a t-shirt. Its also an expensive race for a sprint, especially if you have to sign in the night before - it means you need a place to stay locally which costs more money. Last updated: 2010-06-26 12:00 AM

Drove up to Gilford on Fri afternoon to register and check into hotel. Also drove over to Ellacoya Park to see set up. Drove around a while trying to find a good place to eat dinner. Not know the area that well, I had a hard time finding something that wasnt deep fried or a chain or a biker bar. Ended up at the Lobster Pound in Weir Beach. Not very good. I really need to plan this better next year and know where to go ahead of time or bring my own dinner.
Had a hard time sleeping and got up at 4:30am. Took a quick shower to wake up and ate a bowl of cereal and a yogurt and made a coffee. Glad I brought the Starbucks Via! Drove to Ellacoya Park and was able to find spot. Ate a clif bar. Set up transition area and walked around to see how it was set up. At 6:30 they asked everyone to head over to start area so put on wetsuit and walked over. Was able to get in the water for a quick warm up. Glad I did. Water was also warmer than the air so it was nice to be in the water. Ate Gel right before start. I was in the 3rd wave (7:15). I was very excited to race!
Quick swim warm up. Jumped up and down on beach waiting for my wave to get HR up.
