Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:20 AM and ate a small bowl of oatmeal a banana and had a protein shake. I continued to hydrate during the hour and 10 minute drive to Ft Desoto. After I got marked and my chip I set up my transition area (I was the first person at my rack) so I set up at the end of the rack closest to the fence so I had plenty of room next to the rack out of the way.
Event warmup:

I warmed up with a slow run around the parking lot and swam about 50 yards 10 minutes prior to the 1st wave start time.
Swim
  • 09m 30s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim was light years better than my performance at the Morton Mease Plant Tri in June. I started to the left in the back of the pack with a goal of maintaining a freestyle the entire swim which I did. In hindsight I could have swam faster but over all I am happy with the improvement from my last effort.
What would you do differently?:

Be more confident and swim harder
Transition 1
  • 03m 22s
Comments:

The run up to the transition from the swim was pretty long, My bike was in the 1st rack as you enter the transition area, but that meant I had to run the farthest distance to the bike out which was a bit hard on my feet due to the asphalt parking lot, so I was not as quick running with the bike as I would have liked. Everything else went just like I practiced for transition.
What would you do differently?:

I need to toughen up my feet and learn to jump mount my bike.
Bike
  • 28m 36s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I was happy with the bike. I was almost 2 MPH faster than my last Tri so I am moving in the right direction. The road did seem to get clogged up with riders from time to time which would make it difficult to pass.
What would you do differently?:

I could have ridden a bit harder and been more aggressive with the passing, but I was trying to avoiding getting penalized when passing large groups.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Again I had the longest run to my rack from the bike-in point so my feet got pretty beat up running across the parking lot. That is just wimpy-ness though so that is purely on me. I did run slower to the rack than I would have liked. Everything else went very well in the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Again work on toughening up my feet.
Run
  • 28m 4s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

In hind sight I could have run faster, but I am coming off a calf injury and did not want to pull it again. Overall I had an OK run and the course was nice.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder
Post race
Warm down:

I walked for 5 minutes at a moderate pace to bring down my heart rate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental limitations. This was only second triathlon so I am still feeling my way through it. I will develop with more experience.

Event comments:

My only criticism is the transition area for set up was not lit, and they allowed non racers in the transition area which made it crowded and caused confusion.
