Pre-race routine:

Let me start by saying this was my first triathlon. And all in all, taking into consideration that I've been saddled with a useless right foot for the last year, I'm pretty happy with the results. Due to an ongoing foot injury I haven't run since April and I toyed with not racing but really wanted to get that first tri under my belt.

Got up at 3am, ate some oatmeal and a banana. Headed to Kenosha, boarded the shuttle buses and arrived at transition at 6am. Met my friend Lisa and setup our transitions. Then made the trek to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Just so I don't get in trouble with DjDavey, lets just say I did a warm up. Actually, I walked a half mile from transition to the swim start, does that count? :-)
Swim
  • 15m 54s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Positioned myself near the front and right edge of my wave. I was all prepared for getting kicked, bumped, grabbed, swam over, etc. For some weird reason I was actually a little disappointed when none of that happened! It ended up being a pleasant and uneventful swim. I passed a few people from the waves ahead of me which was a nice morale booster. Felt great the whole way and in hindsight I should have pushed my pace...I could have definitely swum this faster. But boy, did I feel like junk those first few minutes out of the water on the way to T1. Not sure what happened there...maybe the body needs a few minutes to get used to being upright again? Even my husband said I looked pretty bad.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed harder and sighted better. I did end up swimming extra from going off course a bit.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

I really have no sense of whether this a decent time for T1 or a borrible time. I certinaly did not feel like I was going slow however I'm sure there were plenty of things I could have done faster. Mainly, getting my bike off the rack quicker...there must be some trick when you are taller and your seat doesn't clear the rack bar?
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions!
Bike
  • 40m 36s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.73 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike turned out better than expected. I didn't have to hold back too much because of the foot. The course sure seemed to be uphill for the first 3/4 of the ride and with some head wind. I had driven the route the day before in my car and really didn't get a sense of all that uphillness. Passed lots of people though...another nice morale boost. At about mile 8 or so, I realized that for sure I'm going to finish this race....which was exciting because there were so many days over the last few weeks that I thought for sure I wasn't physically able to finish. Even while I was lining up for the swim I wasn't sure how this was all going to go down.
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking corners. I lost a fair amount of time to slow dowing to turn.
Transition 2
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Nothing went wrong, so I guess I'm happy?
Run
  • 33m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Urgh...the dreaded run. Did I mention I haven't run since April? And that I have a foot that doesn't like me?? This was not going to be pretty. I had to employ a walk/run plan and probably ended up running about 50% of the time. Honestly, the foot didn't hold me back nearly as much as the lack of running endurance, which was disappointing but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I was certainly glad to hit the finish line, mainly because I had enough of the running. I did feel a bit like a rockstar with all the cheering spectators lining the finish chute. I did my best to give them impression that I'd been running the whole time and that the run was a piece of cake. :-)
What would you do differently?:

uh....actually run before the race? Not just show up and expect to run 3 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit and then back to transtion to pack up. Found it odd that we then had to ride our bikes back to the parking lot on Hwy 50 since obviously can't take your bike on the shuttle bus. Chuckled when our husbands passed us in the shuttle bus. Maybe we should have made them ride our bikes back while we took the shuttle!!

Event comments:

To be honest I was not looking forward to the sheer volume of people participating in this event. I really thought I was not going to enjoy it. However, at no point did I think the amount of people caused a problem. Every part of the race seemed under control and it was clearly well run. I ended up really enjoying myself!
