Pre-race routine:

Slept really poorly night before but stayed at resort so it was really easy to get ready for race and walk out the door to transition.
Had oatmeal packets that I could have made with coffee maker in room but didn't have spoon, etc. Ended up eating two powerbars since they had enough calories and I knew my sotmach would handle them.
Saw Charlie at swim start. He brought me a tea that kept me warm and gave me some more liquids.
Event warmup:

Volunteers giving out chips had given away my #. Took about 15 minutes for RD to reassign one. At least I got there early and before the big lines started.
OMG, it was cold. need socks to leave on before race and socks in transition for race.
Just some dynamic warmups and stood in water to keep feet from freezing.
Swim
  • 37m 38s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Even as last wave, water was still foggy and looking straight into sun at first turn so hard to site.
Liked the wetsuit. It may be a touch large since I did get some water slosh inside it, but it was easy and comfortable.
First run start of a race. Started on left side toward front. Worked out well. Water was cold but dove right in and started swimming.
What would you do differently?:

When having problems siting, just go ahead and breast stroke to find next buoy. Had to site so frequently at some points that it would have been less energy to pause to identify the bouy instead of trying to find it every few breaths.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

used wetsuit stripper. Came off easily and ran to transition. I had made sure that timing chip and garmin were under the wetsuit so they wouldn;t get in the way when taking suit off.
Dried off, put on headband, helmet, sleeveless jersey, arm warmers, and jacket. Grabbed gloves to put on on bike.
What would you do differently?:

skip the full gloves. Had a hard time getting on jersey. It was full zip and would have been faster to zip it up than pull it over head where it got tangled and stuck.
Overall, pretty good time considering having to put on so much while wet.
Next season, learn the running mount!
Bike
  • 3h 18m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Pulled on gloves while starting to ride. Hard getting them on. Went out a little too hard and made myself slow down the heartrate and breathing. Full gloves also made eating hard.
Headwinds at the end. Lost chain at the start of one hill bc of too big of gear change. Managed to get it back on while riding.
Could have taken off jacket for last third but didn't want to stop. Wasn't overly hot.
What would you do differently?:

Open food packages before race! Needed more calories overall.
Might have been able to go with less clothing but from others complaining of cold, I was probably right.
Would like an aerobar water bottle.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

3rd in AG!
Transition area was crowded at this point with so much stuff so a little hard to place everything in your own space.
What would you do differently?:

T2 went quickly.
Run
  • 2h 22m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Was feeling defeated even before hitting the 1 mile marker. Oh no. This was going to be a long one.
Sipped bottle and two cups of gatorade on course. asome water too bc it tasted good, but might have had too much liquid. Should have at least stuck with gatorade for the calories. Ate about 4 sports beans.
Em and Deidre past me at start of lap two while I was walking. They were too fast anyways, but I couldn't even conceive of trying to stick close to them.
What would you do differently?:

more running.
Body probably could have run more but mind kept me walking. I kept justifying that I wasn't all that much slower walking than I would be if I was running. Bargaining.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Charlie and got vitamin water. walked around and went to lake to cool knees.
Had a piece of pizza which may or may not have been a good idea.
Didn't have to pee for whole race so probably wasn't drinking enough even though it wasn't hot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First off, find my desoto tri shorts! Could not find them anywhere at home! Ended up wearing a pair that I had raced in before but were way shorted than I wanted for this race.
More calories on bike since I couldn't get many on run. Don't push bike so much last few miles.
More running. More running. More running.

Event comments:

Good race. Nicely run.
Lots of helpful volunteers on entire course.
Odd music selection for race area. Excitable Boy?
