Swim
Comments: Went into this knowing it was my first wave swim start, so I started towards the right hand side in the middle of the pack. Ran out and jumped into the water, which was a washing machine of arms and legs the entire time. Started breathing heavily at first which caused me to breast stroke for 3 strokes, then I settled into a "rhythm", but the pack never really separated so there were always people tugging, pulling, kicking, climbing over, etc. I did a lot better than I thought I would in all honesty, so I was really happy about my time. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, just keep up training in the pool and open water, maybe get my technique analyzed by a coach one of these days. Transition 1
Comments: The run to transition from the swim exit was LOOOOOOOOONG, up the entire beach and through part of the run course. My bike was really close to the entrance from the swim which meant I had to run farther with it. I need to work on getting my transitions down, I felt like I was fumbling around and probably could have made up time that way. What would you do differently?: Practice transitions more often, I hardly ever do... Bike
Comments: Heading north was fast and the view was amazing! There was a little warm-up bridge before the Rickenbacker that I cruised up and sped down...Then came the beast! Naples is extremely flat and the closest bridge is about 25 miles away, so needless to say I hadn't trained on hills. Good thing I take spin class at least once a week! Going up the Causeway wasn't bad at all, I stood up a few times, crested the top, and absolutely flew down...I was kinda scared the ridges in the bridge would cause a tire blow out, but luckily everything held up! Right after coming down we had to go back up...this time was tougher because I didn't shift down enough (and was afraid of throwing my chain if I shifted on the way up) and the winds were hitting us in the face. Coming down the winds were howling in my ears and I actually pedaled down because of the wind. The ride back to transition was tougher because of the winds, but I made it back and was happy I was able to be in aero for about half of the course (just got my clip-ons a week and a half ago, not used to them yet). What would you do differently?: Push harder on the bike...I could have gone harder on the flat section, but wasn't 100% sure how to pace myself since this was my first tri where I would have to run after. My legs were burning a bit and I was breathing heavier than I normally do so it definitely wasn't a walk in the park...I'm sure the winds had a decent effect on my time as well. Transition 2
Comments: I really need to work on this...I had a hard time racking my bike and I wasn't multitasking. If I can work on this, I'll gain free speed! What would you do differently?: Practice, practice, practice! Run
Comments: It was HOT HOT HOT! I'm glad I had my handheld Nathan bottle because I didn't drink anything on the bike (BAD!). 5Ks are tough because they hurt so much, and I was ready to be done pretty much as soon as the run started ;). I did slow down a few times but unconsciously picked my speed back up right after...it's like my brain said slow down but my body said speed up, isn't it supposed to be the other way around?? I actually finished better than I thought I would, only 44 seconds off of my open 5k PR so not too shabby considering the heat! What would you do differently?: Just keep training, I definitely want to increase my running mileage and learn to like running a lot more than I do now! Post race
Warm down: Immediately chugged some water, got a banana and some free Muscle Milk for protein. Stayed on my feet and walked around...my lower back was sore and I had bloody blisters on both heels from not pulling socks up far enough before the bike...ouch! What limited your ability to perform faster: Slow transitions, windy bike course, overall heat (July in Florida!) Event comments: The food tent was decent, bagels, fruits, pancakes...awards were pretty unorganized but everything else was great!!! Last updated: 2010-07-18 12:00 AM

Saturday morning I did a quick 6 mile ride and 1.5 mile run just to keep things fresh...got everything packed and hit the road for Miami around noon, ended up getting to Mack Cycle around 2:00 to pick up my packet. Checked into the hotel, drove the bike course, and scouted out the general area of Key Biscayne. After that, we walked around Coco Walk and downtown Miami. Ate an early dinner (fajitas) at Mr. Moe's and had some gelato after (my favorite!). Got back to the hotel and laid everything out for race day, finished my fajitas and hit the sack around 9. Slept horribly, lots of South Beach partiers making noise throughout the night as they stumbled back into the hotel...woke up at 5, got ready, and ate my banana/mini clif bar on the way to the race.
Set up my transition area and got the end of the rack (yay!). Pumped up my tires and prayed for no flats this time. Ate another mini clif bar and washed that down with some water; hit the bathroom and walked down to the start. Got into the water, which was colder than the Gulf, and swam a few hundred meters to get warmed up. Watched the other waves take off and headed down to the water to start!
