Pre-race routine:

Up at 4, coffee, smoothie, woke up Jesse. Checklists and out the door at 5:30 to arrive at transition for the 6:30 opening.
Event warmup:

Stretching and a bit of jogging. Got in the water and swam a few hundred yards.
Swim
  • 10m 21s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I decided to get right up front and on the inside, which is the opposite of my usual strategy. This time it looked like the outside route added too much yardage. It worked pretty well, and I ran in and started swimming right away. I did snag the rope a couple of times, but I swam good and hard the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

I wish I had worn my wetsuit. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, wear the dang wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Transition went well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 38m 46s
  • 14.8 miles
  • 22.91 mile/hr
Comments:

The third woman, Carpenter-Rosa, a guy in blue and red, and I all were going about the same speed, and we ended up leapfrogging each other all the way until the end. I love racing like that!
What would you do differently?:

Even though this was my fastest bike split ever, I need to get comfortable enough on my tri bike to race it every time. I used it 3 out of 4 times this year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

It went well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 24m 59s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I hit the first mile mark at 7:48, so everything was going well at that point. I was surprised to see the results where my overall pace had dropped to 8:04. I didn't think I was going that slow and I'm very disappointed with my slowest Sprint 5k ever.
What would you do differently?:

I did stick with my plan to get out quick and hit the first mile hard, but my intention was to really fly along the backside of the lake, which I apparently did not do.
Post race
Warm down:

Some walking around and a good, thorough stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I still haven't found the reserve of mental strength that allows me to give a spurt of speed in one of these races.

I guess it's not a surpise to have a slow run after my fastest bike split ever.

Event comments:

This is very well organized and I really love the routes. Running around the lake is a nice change. Post-race food left a bit to be desired. I really like having the kids' race on the same day. Jesse raced and took 3rd place in his AG.
