Swim
Comments: I have only done one triathlon before this, so I was a little worried about getting kicked and swam over in the swim. In the very beginning I was swam over a couple of times. At first it was frustrating but then i moved a bit to the outside and focused on technique. The water was smooth and before I knew it, the swim was done. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a little more, the swim ended more quickly than I was expecting and I probably could have knocked a couple of minutes off my time. Transition 1
Comments: I was able to get my wetsuit off quickly and then dried off my feet and put on socks and shoes. I did not pre clip my shoes into my bike pedals because I have never done it before. Actually I just got my clipless pedals two weeks ago. What would you do differently?: I think I should have practiced transitions more at home, I could definately move a little quicker. Bike
Comments: I had a great bike. My goal was to do it in 3hrs and everything just went smoothly. The course was flat and fast and my bike just seemed to be flying. Since it was overcast I didn`t feel that thirsty and didn`t drink enough. I succussfully picked up gatorade and water bottles from aid stations (my first time ever and I was worried about it!). The roads were a little wet so turns were tricky and definately slowed me down. What would you do differently?: Drink more! Transition 2
Comments: Realized I was dehydrated a bit and tried to drink a bunch of leftover gatorade from the bike ride before starting on the run. Run
Comments: When I started I wanted to make sure I didn`t start too strong and hit the wall. So I decided to run 10min miles (I orginally wanted to complete the run in under 2hrs) for the first loop and speed up the second half if I felt good. I was really hot and got very dehydrated. By mile 4 I was drinking 2 cups of water and 2 of gatorade at every aid station, as well as pouring a cup of ice down my shirt. It was very hot and I ended up sticking to 10min miles the entire race, and it was tough to keep up that pace. What would you do differently?: Drink more on the bike. Do more longer runs in training. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I had hoped to finish between 6 and 6.5kms and I definately went a lot faster than expected! Event comments: Great for my first half ironman. Don`t know how it could have gone better. Last updated: 2010-07-26 12:00 AM

I woke up at 4:30 and had two bananas, a protein bar and coffee. I ate a bunch the night before and didn`t want to have too much the day of because my stomach can get upset if I eat too much too close to a swim. I left the hotel at 5:00 and drove over to parking. It was pouring rain and a little cold (which I was happy about because I was worried about whether or not it would be wetsuit legal, it was). I took the shuttle to the transition and set up, keeping my shoes and socks in bags, hoping to keep them dry.
From the transition there was a 1.2mile walk to the swim and once getting to the swim, I about 10mins of swimming to warm up. Then I watched the pros waves go and two age groups before it was my turn, wave 5. I met another girl from Canada in my age group and we were right together most of the swim.
