Suburu Triathlon Series
72F / 22C
Precipitation
Total Time = 49m 40s
Overall Rank = 84/280
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 15/24
Pre-race routine:

Registered. Set up transition area. Tried to keep gear dry. Should have brought a garbage bag to place over and under gear.
Event warmup:

Went for a 30 second swim just prior to race. It rained pretty hard for the 1.5 hours leading up to the race and for the start of the race.
Swim
  • 08m 36s
  • 375 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

1st tri so I was quite excited and nervous.
Was pleased with time, but felt I panicked quite a bit at times, overexerting myself. Upon reflection, I did not breathe out while underwater, and never got comfortable or relaxed. Needed to breaststroke on several occasions. Was completely wiped upon exit and could not run through transition.
Short distance from swim to transition area with feet staying surprisingly clean.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more open water swims.
Focus on breathing and relaxing, rather than worrying about performance.
Longer warmup to get into a comfortable groove.
Transition 1
  • 04m 1s
Comments:

Timed this myself (from exit of water to the bike line).
I was so wiped after the swim that I took my time, dried off, and was not as organized as I had hoped due to all the rain and my gear being soaked.
Rain was starting to let up at this time. Forgot to drink some water.
What would you do differently?:

Plan transition better and for potential of rain. Bring less gear into transition. Not dry off anything but feet.
Drink some water.
Bike
  • 27m 32s
  • 10 kms
  • 21.79 km/hr
Comments:

Felt I did farely well considering I was on a mtn bike.
What would you do differently?:

Wish I had pushed this part a little harder. Buy a road bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Rode with running shoes so transition went quite well. Drank a little water at this time.
Run
  • 13m 34s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 05m 26s  min/km
Comments:

first 1.5kms felt tough, but last km felt much better. It was encouraging to pass a few people along the way.
What would you do differently?:

Train this area a little more. Continue to practice the bike/run brick. Vary the training a bit more with intervals, sprints, longer runs, etc.
Post race
Warm down:

walked a bit. drank lots of water. waited for friend to finish and celebrate together.

Event comments:

1st race so it's tough to rate. If all other races are like this, then I'd be quite pleased. Can't wait to try it again.
