Swim
Comments: So this was my first open water swim race. And it was pretty crazy!!! I know theres lots of room for improvment but thatll come. I thought my start was excellent. I was going pretty quick apparantly because right before the first buoy it got to the point where I couldnt breath. I thought I was panicking but apparantly it was me just going to fast and my heart rate being to high. So I slowed down and everything got better. However, I had to breath with every stroke so that coulda been better. Not bad though... it allowed me to finish! I tried to draft but it just did not work out. I could not navigate for anything, whether it was navigating off a person to draft or off of a buoy... I always ended up off course. Waves werent much of a problem at all. I was kinda depresesd by the swim because there were Sprint swimmers coming out of the water with me... I thought that started 40 mins after us. However, I found out that I finished in under 30 mins s that made me really happy! What would you do differently?: Just need to practice on open water swimming skills... sighting, drafting, etc. Also, probably go slower in the first part so I dont freak out and panic. And maybe a little slower overall so I dont feel so bad during the other parts of the race. Transition 1
Comments: Everything went good... it was slow but I had to slow down to get everything off. And take a breather. I can get faster but I think thats just gonna come with practice. What would you do differently?: Just practice transitions and then get more fit on the swim part so Im not so tired and then can go through faster. Bike
Comments: Maybe went too hard on this... the first lap went pretty good. Tried to get a negative split on the second lap but it just didnt happen. Was a little slower. Also, at the start of the second lap, the race officials were letting a van out of the parking lot right as I was coming up. They failed to mention that I needed to go straight and not turn, which I did. So this cost me a few seconds and maybe even a place. This was a really dumb mistake on their part that could have been averted. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Just need to do some negative split training. I think I read about that a few days before I raced... Also, I think I need to not drink as much. Transition 2
Comments: This went good... its easy. Run to rack, rack bike, take off shoes and helmet, and put on shoes. I even had time to talk a little bit with Ron. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: This was tough. Right from the beginning, when I straightened up to run, my stomach started cramping really bad. I eventually realized that it was my race number belt and took it off. Still,I did good, even though it was hot and calm. Again, I tried the negative split thing but it didnt work. Still, this allowed me to push it, giving me a much better time. Also, I was drinking a lot of water during the first part. I think this slowed me down as well. What would you do differently?: Do not wear the race number belt, at least not on my stomach. Dont drink so much at the aid stations. Work on negative split training. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and took a shower! What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall, I feel that my first Olympic triathlon went pretty swell. I am happy with my results... my goal was to finish in 2:30 but I honestly feel that that was to much. With how I felt during and after the race, I am happy that I gave it my all. I cant wait to see where I am able to get to in the future with more work... this race only motivated me more to see how far I can push my potential. Event comments: Just that one confusion at the start of the second bike lap was the only thing that was messed up about the race. It was pretty big though. Also, the buoys in the water were pretty small. If it wasnt for the crowd in front of me, I would have never found them in the water. Of course, it is entirely possible that this is because of my poor sighting skills. Last updated: 2010-08-05 12:00 AM

Day before: drove course, watched 40 year old virgin, and went to bed at around 10.
Morning of: woke up at 4:30 and ate a breakfast of a bagel with pb/h. Just drank some water. Got to transition set up at about 5:30 and set up trans area... I got a really good spot right by the transition exit. Once I was set up, I walked down to the lake to get a feel of the water temp and rehearse transitions. Drank from a water bottle and then ate some Clif Bloks to get ready.
Ran from transition to truck to get something I forgot and back; swam about 400 meters to get warmed up.
