Transition 1
Comments: everything seemed to go as planned except putting all my food in my jersey before putting on my jersey. that didn't work out so well What would you do differently?: leave food on the ground Bike
Comments: I CRASHED!!! there was a set of train tracks that ran diagonally across the road and i caught my wheel in one of the ruts and went over my handlebars pretty hard. cut up my left forearm right were it rests in the areobars, cut my right hand, and worst of all bruised the hell (and cut) my right thigh. that made the bike hard and the run harder. Also, i f-ed up my bike a bit so my chain jumped off twice during the ride. it was hard. On a positive note, i climbed like a banshee. seriously there were several times that i passed over 15 people on a single hill. the only people who really passed me throughout the ride were in full areo-gear...makes me wonder... What would you do differently?: don't crash! Transition 2
Comments: this transition was very good. the only issue i had was "cleaning" out my jersey from all the crap that i wasn't going to use on the run (sleeves, broken watch from crash, wrappers, bagel that got stuck in my jersey on my back, etc). What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: so my quad was KILLING me from the crash. i seriously thought about not continuing the race when i left the transition area. the hills (both up and down) were terrible on my leg. I pressed on though and was proud of how i did. i took 5 walking steps in the aid station at mile 3 and realized that would probably kill me so i kept running until i thought i was going to puke at mile 9 and i walked another aid station. someone who'd been walking too encouraged me to keep going and i finished without another walking step. i cramped (the pills and powergel caused the pukey feeling at 9) but other than that i was okay. What would you do differently?: don't crash on the bike! actually, i'd try to run a little harder. my "natural" pace is better than 8:40 and i think i'd feel better running my normal pace. but i really couldn't this time because of my thigh... Post race
Warm down: bad. went to the medic tent for treatment from my crash and didn't stretch or anything. my quad totally tightened up (bruise spot) and i could barely walk What limited your ability to perform faster: the crash Event comments: 1) why no finishers gear?! that's crap for all we pay. 2) COVER THE DAMN TRAIN TRACKS!!! I ride over tracks on my routine training ride at least twice a week. i knew they were there. i am a fairly experienced rider and i still crashed. i heard of at least 4 others who did. that's unacceptable. get some damn carpet (oh, heard you did that for the last wave...nice timing... 2) THE RUN WAS UGLY...figure out something different. we don't need to finish in town. 3) the cops, national guard and voluteers did a hell of a job with a tough course crowd control - thanks!
