Swim
Comments: I had been wishing I hadn't left my wetsuit in the UK, but the water was so warm I didn't need it. Plus the course was so short and I probably would have lost more time taking it off than I would have gained in the swim. In my last tri, I went out too fast and suffered from asthma and a bit of panic on the swim. I started in the back, but quickly made it to the middle. I was deep in the pack, and right at the bouys at the turns. At times it was so shallow, it was easier to jog in the water a bit. I trashed the bottom of my feet doing this, and will think twice next time. The swim was easy. What would you do differently?: I wished I had started more at the front of the pack for this particular race. It wasn't a hyper competitive field, and I could have gone a bit faster. Transition 1
Comments: This was fine and I gained by not wearing the wetsuit. I was amoung the first on the bike, even though I wasn't the fastest out of the water. Bike
Comments: This was simply amazing for me. I rented a Giant Defy which I loved. I've never ridden this fast, and averaged around 15mph in my other two events. This was FLAT. Really, really flat. All the training in mountains left me well prepared and I was able to keep in a high gear. The course was good, mile markers every 5 miles and I felt great. I passed loads of people in the first two groups, and wasn't passed too much by my wave. The chalk drawings on the course were enjoyable. The crowds and traffic control were very good. What would you do differently?: Nothing, this was a good ride for me. Transition 2
Comments: This was slow-ish. I bought new trainers when I arrived in America and didn't try out the elastic laces until the night before and they were too small, so I needed to tie my shoes. Run
Comments: This was hard. I thought I was running slower than sub-10 minute miles which is pretty fast for me. My legs were tired, and I had calf cramps coming off the bike. I took many little walking breaks. I could carry on a conversation without any trouble, it was just that my legs wouldn't go. What would you do differently?: I don't think anything, I did the best I could. I just have to train more. Post race
Event comments: I simply loved this race. It was well organised, the course was flat and pretty. The atmosphere was fantastic. If I am in Syracuse next year at this time I will do this race again. Last updated: 2010-08-11 12:00 AM

The registration and bike racking were Friday night. I found this to be a bit of a to-do for a sprint event, as the registration hotel was about 15 miles from the bike racking. I imagine this was fine for out-of-town participants, but I was local (at least for that week) and found it a bit of a bother. I wish registration could have been at the same place as the event. The expo was good, and registration fine. I didn't get much sleep as I had to clean out the rental cottage the night before and wake up at 4:15 to get to the race on time.
We got there a bit late, which was totally fine. Set up transition area and then ran to the lake. We waded in a bit to start and had plenty of friendly chats. Women's events in America must be unsurpassed for friendliness.
