Pre-race routine:

I always tell myself I'm going to wake up extra early to prep well for the race but I always end up sleeping in till the last minute. Slept in, got the extra 15 minutes of sleep and showed up to the race about 30 minutes before the start. Drank a redbull and ate a banana.
Event warmup:

Swam for about 3 minutes to warm up since the weather was cold.
Swim
  • 10m 36s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started in the middle of the crowd which was a big mistake as I spent extra energy swimming over people. I guess they forgot to reiterate that if you aren't that fast of a swimmer, go in the middle/back. After rounding the first bouy, a set of good sized waves started to break on the swimmers. I got washed up in the white wash and my goggles came off. Spent some time adjusting the goggles and tried to catch up to the next guy. Got out of the water, took a look back at the beach, saw all the guys that were lined up in the front still in the water swimming. The redbull came back to haunt me, I felt like barfing as soon as I got out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Start in the front?
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

I decided to wear socks due to a blister that I got from the hibiscus half marathon. It cost me extra time but I didn't think I was going to do all that well anyway since my shin splints were still bothering me.
Bike
  • 32m 28s
  • 12.1 miles
  • 22.36 mile/hr
Comments:

Spend the beginning of the bike course trying not to barf from the swim. Debris was everywhere and there were potholes in the beginning of the bike course. Lots of 90 sharp turns and little to no headwind/tailwind.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Got back to the rack and no bikes on it but mine :)
Run
  • 22m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

run course was complete flat with a few turns. Roads were in pretty good shape. Only one aid station for the whole course which was at the run turnaround point. I got passed by only 2 people, one of them being the fastest runner in my age group. Shin splints never acted up too bad during the race but shortly after I was in some real pain.
Post race
Event comments:

Race is very flat and easy, perfect for those starting out.
