Swim
Comments: This is the coldest swim since the incident at 08 Worlds. So I just wanted to swim slow and steady and get through it. Rhythm was good the first 2/3. The buoys were very far in between, so I treaded water a few times to figure out where they were. The wetsuit is also chafing my neck, and it starts to hurt the last half of the swim. Also, the sun was in my eyes the last 3rd of the swim. I couldn't really see any buoys, orange nor green, just light reflecting off the water. I went way off course again. Probably lost 2' on the swim. Stood up as soon as I could and walked in the shallow water for ~100m. Slipped at a spot where it suddenly got deeper. There was a guy that was supposed to alert people of that hazard, but I was too offline to hear his warning, I guess. What would you do differently?: Probably should have just treaded water after I rounded the far buoy and reorient myself so I don't go offline. Treading water for a few seconds is better than swimming off course and losing minutes. Transition 1
Comments: Suit stuck on heels again, what's new? But I was careful to make sure my head is above my heart at all times, and perhaps as a result, I was not dizzy this time. Bike
Comments: I thought it was a flat course, but there were a couple of hills going out, although they're both very manageable. Comming back was flat, but the wind picked up, which made it even harder that the 1st half. Both my Garmin and race results showed I'm >30kph. But BT autocaln only gives me 29.96, ugh! What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I'm quite proud of myself, did not walk at all, and actually sped up the last K and passed another person in my AG. Post race
Warm down: Chatted and hung around with Anne and Ken. Brought some egg tarts and shared with everyone. Susan also got 2nd, so many times this yr now we got the same placing. Event comments: The bad - - extremely slow swim. - did not go over 30kph on the bike, missed by 6 sec. - did not break 3hr, missed by 21 sec. But the good more than overweigh the bad. The good - - another race with fantastic weather. - great venue, lots of cheering spectators. This race must have the most spectators, as it's at the popular Wasaga beach on one of the last summer wkends. Come to think of it, this is the most people at Wasaga Beach I've seen. - completed my first oly in 4yrs, since 06 Worlds at Lausanne. Longest race this season and finished strong. - finished the coldest swim since 08 Worlds, and felt confident that I can swim forever if I swim slow. - finished 2nd AG, which puts me 1st in the series standing going into the last wkend of racing. Yeah!!! Last updated: 2010-08-20 12:00 AM

Usual Mcd coffee and 1/2 muffin en route. Was there 75' before start, lots of time to rack and get ready. Saw a couple of the new Trek Speed Concept 9, one was racked just a few bikes to my left. They look soooo fast, I think my next bike is a SC.
At body marking, the volunteer, an older gentleman, saw my 08 Worlds jacket and asked me how I enjoyed the Vancouver swim. I told him I spent most of my time at the medical tent. He proceeded to tell me he got out of the water, only to be stopped by medical personnel who asked him what his name was. He could not even answer. The guy proceeded to ask the spectators if they knew who he was. His wife yelled, "that's my husband, Frank". But Frank did not know who he was and the medic ordered him straight into the hot tub. Frank told me not to worry about the swim today, it's a balmy 18F (64F), twice as warm as Vancouver's 9C! I guess it's all relative.
Start time was delayed for 15' to let people warm up and get used to the water temp. I brought both a sleeveless and full suit. I feel more comfortable with the sleeveless. The full is constrictive, I sometimes can't breathe in the full, let alone swim. But everyone recommends the full for today. Better to be conscious and not able to breathe and ask for help than to be hypothermic and unconsious and drown.
18C water is still quite cold for me. I put my head in the water a few times to acclimatize to the cold. Didn't feel too bad, swam for 25m and felt ok.
