Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45AM, after doing my usual doze-look at clock-doze routine. M said she slept well, so after getting dressed and putting some breakfast together, off we drove to the shuttle bus pick-up location. The sky was already lightening as we went: looked like it was going to be a lovely day. Got to transition with about half an hour to set up, so we did and then I put my wetsuit half-on to go off to start the swim, leaving M to wait for the bike.
Event warmup:

To get to the swim start takes a half-mile walk around the lake, so that in a half-on wetsuit was a decent start to a warmup! Managed to get in the water and move around a bit before the wave began-- the start area was a busy place, though, so not much chance to do a genuine swim warmup.
Swim
  • 15m 26s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was probably the smoothest-feeling swim I've had in a tri! I managed to situate myself in a great spot where I didn't get caught behind anyone else for very long and could just get into my groove and go. Once I did, it felt AMAZINGLY straightforward and almost relaxing-- I concentrated on being relaxed (worked on visualizing it the night before during the moments when I couldn't sleep!) and blowing out all my air each time. Worked a treat.
What would you do differently?:

Work a bit more on sighting-- I'm not the best at swimming in a straight line! But I don't find sighting difficult (not even when squinting into the sun like today); I just need to work on incorporating it into my swimming a bit more. Oddly enough, when I got out at T1 and was taking my wetsuit off after handing off the timing chip, my goggles broke. Unfortunate, but at least they did so then rather than during the swim itself...
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

They had us running a rather winding chute to get to transition from the swim, which was a bit odd; still, M and I had managed to place ourselves in an easy-to-spot place on the rack, so I ran over there and handed off the timing chip as fast as I could on slightly rubbery legs.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really-- nothing to be done about a winding route for the racers!
Bike
  • 44m 30s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.76 mile/hr
Comments:

M would really have to fill this out, since she did the bike. We drove the course yesterday and found it hilly but doable-- she said she had a great time zooming on the downhills even if she had trouble downshifting on the uphills...I think she now wants her own roadie so she doesn't have to borrow her boyfriend's any more! *chuckle*
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

I saw M at the top of our rack as she was coming in, so came out a bit to meet her and take the timing chip. Around my ankle it went and off I went-- I'd managed to dry off a bit and change into shoes, socks, hat, etc. while I waited. Also got to chat with some of the other relay racers, which was great fun-- I always meet fascinating people at tris!
Run
  • 27m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

This felt really quite good-- I tried to take it a bit faster than my usual 10-min-mile pace because I was fresher, and it seemed to work! It certainly seemed relatively easy, all things considered.
What would you do differently?:

I had plenty left in the tank to sprint to the finish, which was useful in two ways: it told me I *can* run faster than that if I work at it, and it let me know that I've got the energy to do the 10K next weekend. So I could indeed have run harder the whole way, which I might have done a bit differently.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around the site with M, eating bananas and drinking water, cheering on the runners who were just getting out onto the course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Caution about next weekend, really-- which is a bit silly since I've got a week before that race! But I saw this as primarily a training session, and in that respect it worked rather well.

Event comments:

I simply love the Danskin race-- it was my first tri last year, and the vibe was just as positive this year. Great fun to do it with a friend and let her see for herself what all the enthusiasm is about! I asked her during our cool-down if she now wanted to do next year's race on her own, and she said "I do, actually"-- score one for those of us luring the unwary into the addiction that is triathlon...*grin*

Course: Lovely flat-as-a-pancake course around the lake. One water station at the outset and one that served both the outgoing and incoming runners (it was between the two paths); since I'd had some water and some Vitalyte while waiting, I didn't need to stop. Felt a bit bad that I wasn't nearly as hot and tired as those around me who were doing the whole race, so made sure to be as encouraging and/or amusing as possible as I went. (At one point, we ran past an open fire hydrant that sprayed the runners...I wondered aloud, "Wait, haven't we already done the wet part?" It got a chuckle-- I hope whatever I said as I went was helpful to at least someone; also made sure to thank the volunteers at every point!)
