Swim
Comments: Tough swim. The breakers were intimidating. Ran out into the breakers for about 40 yards, then began swimming just before the buoy. Saved ground on the first buoy, with the intent of swimming a straight course. I was trying to swim a good line but most people were outside of me. I kept them in view but ended up pushed out a good bit and swam alot of extra yards getting back to the last buoy. On the swim in, the current pushed me away from the exit point and I had to run back to it. The big waves were a challenge but I was compfortable with them. Probably good for confidence in Gulf swims. What would you do differently?: Understand the current before I got in the water in order to swim a tighter route. Transition 1
Comments: First tri since last October but I didn't have any issues. I didn't start with pedals on the bike. I may practice that again but don't feel like it helps much.. Bike
Comments: Crosswind was a pleasant surprise. I tried not to go out to hard, but I always do. I caught a nice Kestrel Airfoil and a Kuota going up the bridge. Thought I was hot stuff. They both passed me back on the return along with the race winner from the next wave. I passed 68 bikes. I had a good ride, not as much power on the return but splits were identical. What would you do differently?: Speed was identical to last year with 2 extra miles. Get in more speed work and understand my power output better. Transition 2
Comments: Again not as crisp as usual but no serious issues. I grabbed my Power Tap computer off the bike so I could have HR with me on the run. What would you do differently?: Probably won't bother with carrying power tap computer on run. Run
Comments: Felt pretty good but didn't have any speed. I got passed by 50 people on the run :(. Ankle hurt some the last mile and half but not horribly, it was lack of speed that whipped me today, not pain. What would you do differently?: Run training has been minimal and slow pending ankle surgery. I was 2 minutes slower than last year but I it wasn't unexpected. I hope once I get ankle surgery I can improve again on the run. Post race
Warm down: Finish line to cheer in friends, family, and fellow triathletes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Ankle and lack of any speedwork. Event comments: This race is really what racing is about for Marcy and I. We started at this race in 2002 (I was on a relay team) and had so much fun, we got really into the sport. The lifelong friends we started racing with were all at this race and most of them in our house. In addition, my wifes sister did this race too. It was her first tri in open water (what a way to break in to open water). Marcy was 3rd in her age group and 11th overall female and beat me by 25 seconds. The post race party was great as usual. Plenty of beer and food but the lines for free beer were long. We didn't let that stop us as they pay beer lines were not long. Results are a little slow because they don't have chips but just more time to socialize. Met 2 BT'ers (jhacker and tee). Jessica completed her first race and Tee had the 4th best swim out of over 400 racers. Last updated: 2006-02-09 12:00 AM

Day before did little bike/run brick as usual. Packed bag Friday afternoon I got everything packed as I had to go out to a banquet that night. Didn't get in till 11 and the lightning and pre race led to poor sleep. Got up at 5:00, drove 2 miles to the race start at 6. Bike racks aren't numbered so we got there early and got decent spots. Late arrivers crowed us as usual.
Light stretching and a quick jump in the water. Stood around looking at how big the breakers were.
