Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 5 AM, ate a good breakfast of dry cereal and a power bar, and then made sure I had everything I needed. I was not staying at the host hotel, so we left at 6, and got to transition by 6:15. I set up everything at transition, and then headed out to the swim start to watch the pros. Anything at this point to ease those pre-race jitters.
Event warmup:

I warmed up in the water for about the last half hour until our start time of 8:40. I felt good and was extremely happy with the calmness of the water. However, even during the practice swim the day before, when the water was not calm AT ALL, I kind of enjoyed swimming in it. And I am NOT a good swimmer. Riding the waves was kind of fun.

Comments:

So, every previous triathlon I have done, I panic in the swim. I either need to stop and float/doggy paddle my way to catch my breath, or resort to back stroke. So I was very scared to do this swim. It was my first HIM, so my first race at this distance of a swim. I, somehow, found the solution to open water swimming without freaking out, and did it! I swam freestyle the entire way, with no trouble breathing. Even half way through, I decided to kick it up a notch and start swimming faster. It was awesome and I had so much fun in the water!
What would you do differently?:

absolutely nothing. Maybe swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

I took my time. I had to pee at this point, but decided I would wait until I got back from the bike and before the run. I probably should have gone because I had to go so bad and i was not about to get off my bike to pee on the course.
What would you do differently?:

I would have peed.
Bike
  • 3h 26m

Comments:

The bike segment went well. I made sure to pace myself for 56 miles. I have not riden that far but once in my life, so I was unsure how I would feel. It turns out that I felt great the whole time. I probably could have pushed slightly harder, but that probably would have ruined my run, so I am quite happy with how I did. The hills were not too rough. Going down them was fun, and I just tried to go up as fast as I could (which was not fast) so that I didn't lose too much time. I don't have a very snazzy bike yet, so I am happy with my time. Maybe with a new, fancy bike, I can get this segment faster for the next half I do. The winds were a little rough at times. That is always the part I hate the most. The tailwinds were great, but those headwinds and crosswinds killed.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little bit harder and go a little bit faster.
Transition 2
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

I peed this time around. I am surprised I went through this transition as fast as I did. I just took my time again and let my legs un-jello-ify. I brought some GU with me and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 00m
  • 13.1 miles

Comments:

The run was fantastic. I love running, but usually I don't feel very good after a bike ride, so it makes running not as much fun. After about 2 miles, my legs adjusted and I fell into my stride. I was feeling pretty great the whole run. I paced myself incredibly well and felt like I was flying past people at some points. I stopped at most of the aid stations for water to let those legs get a little bit of a rest. I took in about two GU's during the run, and ate some of those delicious pretzels they gave. That was perfect. I loved having the aid stations every mile because it gave me something to look forward too.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster. I felt so good towards the end that I had wished that I pushed myself a little bit more. However, this was my first HIM, so I didn't want to do anything stupid.
Post race
Warm down:

I immediately drank two bottles of water, then headed directly to post race food. I found that I couldn't eat anything for about 30 minutes, so I just kind of stared at my food and walked around with it. I had about 3 muscle milks during the course of the rest of the day (which are SO good!), and lots of diet pepsi. I took a bunch of those cookies too. I kept walking around because whenever I would sit, I would tighten up like crazy.

Event comments:

I highly recommend the Rev3 series. They are very organized and made this race the most fun they possibly could! Great job Rev3!
