Pre-race routine:

started to carb up on Thursday morning - bagel for breakfast, pizza for dinner, bagel Friday, Pasta Friday night - good sleep night prior. cut back a little on training (reduced Thurday swim by 10-15 minutes, no strength workout on Friday, no bike workout on Saturday).
Event warmup:

walked from car to tent - -hopped up and down to stay warm - wearing running tights, wool socks, trail shoes, fleece gloves, fleece ear warmers, UA cold wear shirt - - left jacket, fleece warmup pants, etc. in backpack at check-in. At 8:26 headed out to starting line and jogged back towards Johns Hopkins about .25 mile (found a porta pot and used it at a construction site - no line!)jogged for 15 minutes before race start. Felt nice and comfy. Ate oatmeal for breakfast, drank full bottle of perpetuem, made thermos of hot tea (didn't drink much) - sipped gatorade with oatmeal. Brought Gatorade with me - - drank after the race - didn't need fluids before.

Comments:

Very glad I warmed up - my breathing was steady and I felt good throughout the entire run. Thought the hills would be steeper so held back to make sure I didn't overdo. No problem, kept listening to all the runners carrying on conversations (?? - how can they talk AND run?)the lap around the lake seemed big in the beginning - next thing I know, I'm coming around the last curve and I KNOW it's all downhill - - -loved the downhill - - why do people try to stop their momentum on the downhills? I was flying and even managed to sprint hard the last 100 yards. Awesome :)
What would you do differently?:

hmmm....maybe run a little harder a little sooner - - sometimes it's tough to get around people - I had to dodge back and forth - must be a better way to do this.....
Post race
Warm down:

walked to tent - -drank gatorade - enjoyed cookies - found others from BATC - checked time on my garmin - was very pleased.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not knowing the course in advance.

Event comments:

Really enjoyed this race. It was fun to see everyone dressed up - lot's of Santa's!! Even though it was cold - the sun was out and it was a gorgeous day!

Not too happy about having placements determined by time "across the finish line" rather than actual race time per the chip. I intentionally started way in the back, so my across the finish line time was an additional 4 minutes which according to their results dropped me from 48/95 to 55/95. hmmm........
