Pre-race routine:

3+ cups of coffee (not too much or else I'll be in lineups for the bathroom), 3 slices of toast with PB&J. Should have had a banana - I forgot.
Event warmup:

Short jog (to the bathroom) and pre-swim warm up (arm circles, etc) and short 20m hard swim to get use to water temp. it was quite cool.
Swim
  • 32m 59s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 12s / 100 meters
Comments:

I let the masses go ahead, then joined washing machine. Very little bumping so it didn't knock me off my game. water was so cold that my lips felt cold and blue making it hard to breath. Few calf cramps in the second lap too. Despite the cold weather, I just concentrated on my form, and even thought "go slow to go faster" and I think it worked.

I spend quite a bit of time working on the swim this year and I was almost 5 min faster this year. Happier with swim times, getting closer to MOP. If I can get there, that's good enuf for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - just about as good as it could have been.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 1h 21m 19s
  • 37.6 kms
  • 27.74 km/hr
Comments:

I was a chicken sh!t on the down hills and rode my brakes. With the slick wet roads, I didn't want any road rash (or worse) for the sake of 20 seconds here or there. In the end it may have cost me a couple or 3 minutes. My feet were really cold, numb even. Didn't get feeling back till 2+ km into the run.

Despite additional training and better fitness, I was ~3 min slower than last year. I would attribute this all to the wet conditions. Oh well, I either need to grow a pair or get better at downhills.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I guess :(
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 51m 18s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 08s  min/km
Comments:

Run was ~30 sec faster than last year. Aerobically I was more comfortable (ie. wasn't breathing too hard) but my legs were tired by second lap. This year, I felt more constrained by muscle endurance than aerobic fitness. Oh well, another thing to work on over the off season :(
What would you do differently?:

Run longer distances to simulate fatigue prior to the run portion. This year I did some intervals which helped my aerobic capacity. now I need to maintain, but work on endurance.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wet roads.

Event comments:

Thanks to the volunteers for braving the elements. While it was cold for the racers, I'm sure it was even harder on the volunteers.
