Pre-race routine:

This was my first Half Ironman, so I was a little nervous.
Work up about 4:30AM and had a bagel and banana right away. Washed it down with some gatorade. Headed out to the trasition area at about 5:30AM. A nice hard rain started to fall before the start but stopped just before the swim start.
Event warmup:

I didn't really warmup, just stretched a little.
Swim
  • 43m 35s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

I liked the swim couse. A straight out round a buoy and back. I actually found someone to draft behind on the way back but he led me off the course for a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Don't trust someone else's navigation skills.
Transition 1
  • 09m 31s
Comments:

This was my first half ironman so I was taking my time in transition and making sure I had all my nutrition and such with me. I also had my stuff in a garbage bag to keep it dry, so the transition took me a little longer than usual.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, could have been better if there was no rain and I could keep all my stuff out.
Bike
  • 3h 23m 13s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.53 mile/hr
Comments:

It started raining about 10 miles into the bike for me. At one point, the rain was coming down so hard it was hurting. I had good hydration because I had to stop twice to go to the bathroom, at one stop there was a line which ruined my time. This actually helped a litte because I would walk around and get the feeling back in my feel, very wet and cold. There was a few mile section of road in the last third of the course that was very rough and difficult to navigate. Thanks to the people at the rest stops. They were great!
What would you do differently?:

I should have been up around 17.5 or 18 mph, but I will blame this on the weather and my bathroom breaks.

Maybe get some new bike shoes that don't need socks. They were socked. It was good I brought an extra pair for the run.
Transition 2
  • 06m 55s
Comments:

I had to go to the bathroom again. The good news is that I was well hydrated.
Run
  • 2h 08m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I kept a good steady pace until about Mile 9. My leg began to hurt a little and I had to walk up the last two hills. Otherwise I kept the average pace under 10 minutes so I was happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the hulls a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and walked a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I actually was just getting over a cold, so I was a little limited. It proabably added 10 or 15 minutes to my time oeverall.

Event comments:

This was actually a very good race. I heard a lot of bad oomments about it but I liked the venue, lots of hotels close by for family memsbers to go back to while they wait for the race to end. A little depressing to get done with your race and see all the people with the shorter races all done and gone. I also liked how the transition area was right next to the swim start. It gives you plenty of time to set your bike up and then wait for them to call your race start. The bike couse had very good people giving directions at all the intersections and lots of rests stops. Run also had good drink stops. I will probably do it again in 2011 or 2012.

Course: I think the couse favored the people with road/race bikes rather than the tri bikes. There were some rough and wet roads with many turns, probably not good for the tri bike people. I saw probably about six people changing tires.
