Run
Comments: While my whisper goal was 1:55, I never expected to come in under 1:53. My first mile was much faster than last year b/c I had moved into the 1st wave and it separated out quickly so that we could get a good pace going. Basically my game plan was to run 8:45 (or less if comfortable) as long as I could, banking the 15 seconds through (hopefully) at least mile 10. As it turned out, I hit mile 10 in 85 min (8:30 pace) and was able to do the last 5K in 27+. The park stretch took a bit out of me, but I came out much stronger than last year. I felt pretty good the entire way (other than the blister). Last 5K I was hurting, but that was expected, and I was able to run through it. A little back issues around mile 11/12, but I think the exercises have really helped on that front. Took water at every stop running through. What would you do differently?: Other than remember the water/gatorade for the drive over / pre-race, and get there with a little more time to spare for stretching/warm-up, nothing. This was as good an execution of a race strategy as I've ever done. It helped having done it last year and no doubt, being 10 lbs lighter than last year also helped. I was REALLY HAPPY with this run!!!! Post race
Warm down: Found Karen, had some pizza and powerade. Felt light-headed until I got some fuel in my system. I was glad I didn't have to drive home alone. What limited your ability to perform faster: Blister (that was pretty gross post-race). Could still stand to lose 10+ more lbs. Event comments: This is a great race and Richmond really rolls out the carpet for everyone. With 16K+ participants (in all 3 races), it's by far the biggest race I've ever done and that makes it a unique experience for me. Volunteers are amazing... great bands / music along the way (loved the Gospel group around mi 11). It's a bit of a hike for me, especially with the pre-race packet pickup being the day before. Either need to make a weekend of it or pass on it next year... just too far / too much driving. However, if I ever decide to do a marathon, it will be this one (and I'll stay in Richmond). Speaking of which, saw the top 3 marathon finishers... wow... did the winner look smooth and strong at 26 miles. Amazing! Last updated: 2010-09-15 12:00 AM

Thurs Night: Goals - 1st. mi will be congested, hope to do 9.30 or so, then maintain 8:45 or less through mile 11 (highest point in race). Then hang on for last 2.1 mile and see what I've got left. Goal - under 2 hours. I'll be disappointed if I don't achieve that. I'll be thrilled if I'm under 1:55. 1:58 is probably my stated goal time.
Woke up before the alarm at 4:15. Had a cup of coffee and decided the milk was on its way out, so went with toast instead of cereal. Stretched a little and took a shower. Forgot to bring water/gatorade to drink before race. Finally decided on long sleeve tech shirt and shorts for the race. We left at 5:25 and arrived at the start-line 5 minutes before the start. Note to self - leave no later than 5:10 next year.
Fast walk the 12 or so blocks to the start after struggling to find decent parking... finally went with a pay lot. Last year we were much closer. Got to start just in time. Stretched just a bit, gave Karen a kiss, and off to the races. I was in wave 1 which went to 2 hr... my estimated time was 1:58. Was pretty thirsty by this point.
