Swim
Comments: I was kicked in the head by some girl swimming breast-stroke. My goggles flew off and I had to readjust. Luckily only happened on the way to the first buoy. After that I stuck to the inside lane and it was a clear swim to the finish. Pleasant. I suspect the swim might have been a little long, or last years was a little short. My garmin sugests it might have been a little long and the swim comparison times between 2009 and 2010 support that. What would you do differently?: Start off to the inside, instead of the middle back. Transition 1
Comments: Putting on cycling gloves took ages. I couldn't believe this years transition was faster than last year (4:50) What would you do differently?: I wouldn't have bothered with the gloves. Bike
Comments: First time racing on Perpetuem. Very pleasant experience - Never felt hungry or dehydrated. I was suprised with the little practice that my bike time was better than last year by 6 minutes. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. good improvement from last year. Transition 2
Comments: Took maybe a bit long to just catch my breath and cool down. What would you do differently?: Not run with trail shoes. They changed the route and it now had hardly any trail running compared to last year. Run
Comments: I probably drank too much and started taking salt pills every 30min, instead of every hour, since I expected craming in this heat. This blows me up like a baloon. So I stopped taking so many salt pills towards the last 1½ and it helped a little. The run took me 21minutes longer than last year. I guess I have to accept it was hotter, and last year I was training for the Arizona Ironman,vs this year where this race falls in my "time off" after Ironman St.George. What would you do differently?: Walk less. Shuffle more. Post race
Warm down: Sit in the Ice truck. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat. Training. Event comments: Mountain Man events......what can I say. It's the 3rd year in a row we're doing this one. It has gotten much better. The aids stations were a huge improvement. Much more volunteers and actually water and ICE!! Even some Hammer Gels! Compared to last year 100% improvement. This year the timing mat and finishing area was still out when I finished. Previous years they broke everything down way ahead of time. It's a hard race (course and heat), don't expect too much from the organizers. The expo this year was pathetic - I asked them what happened and they said that they just didn't show up. BUT - if you really want a hard race and are training for something like Ironman St George, I can recommend doing this. Last updated: 2010-09-19 12:00 AM
