Pre-race routine:

This was my first tri since Wildflower Long Course 2009, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to do them anymore due to various medical reasons. I had thought about doing this for a few weeks, but finally got permission :) the week before. Figured if I was racing Calif. 70.3, it was probably wise to get a relatively recent one under my belt.

That said, pre-race routine consisted of rooting out and trying to find all my old race stuff! Started to get that pre race excitement as I was packing the bag on Sat afternoon. Got those race juices flowing.

Had a bit of a wonky hip, so my goal was just to participate, not to hammer anything, and make sure the hip wasn't getting worse. I've been running a bit, about 15 miles a week, riding at most once a week, and usually less, and cut back swimming to 2X week. Well, that was the plan, anyway.

Was racing with Mike, my main training buddy. I've ridden thousands of miles and swam thousands of yards and run hundreds of miles with him, but we've only ever raced once together, so it was cool to be racing with him.
Event warmup:

Nothing much, walked into the water to acclimate, and it was really warm, stood up to a couple waves that came in a set and was surprised, they packed a bit of a wallop. but looong intervals, so it was just luck of the draw if you had to deal with surf. No running or biking.

Comments:

Again, I wasn't going to get in the scrum, but mike called me up (he's a VERY strong swimmer), and I ended up starting front right. Swim was a bit choppier than I expected, sighting and navigation shore to buoy and buoy to shore wasn't that great, parallel to shore was good. Who knows.

At one point I looked over at the guy next to me and thought "is he drowning??" he looked horrible, flailing around, but... he was keeping up with me, so maybe I look like that :^

Not the greatest swim, based on past years was expecting about 11 minutes. But I wasn't tracking time so I had no idea what the split was until they were posted online.

Was a very calm swim combat wise, no elbows or knees. being thrown. No waves going out or coming in.

Includes run up the beach in deep sand to T1. Have to admit the swim was pretty tiring. a 2:09/100 split is misleading, as it was 29th overall, so maybe the course was long? then again, #1 swimmer went 8:50 But I know guys that went sub 10 last two years and went nearly 13 this year

Did OK, considering I haven't T1'd in about 17 months

I was happy to see Mike still in T1, and leaving soon after I got there.

Comments:

Nice course on streets I know well, and almost all closed. Was riding the tri bike with HED3s, so thought maybe I could go 20+, but honestly haven't been riding much. I rode the trainer twice for :50 the week prior, but other than that been riding essentially every other saturday for the last couple months, so the fitness isn't there.

As we hit the first straight, I saw mike about 400 yds ahead of me, though over 12 miles I might catch him. But every time we hit a turn then a straight, he was still... 400 yds ahead. He had said he ws going to cruise, as I did. But you know when you get on the race course, it's just hard to hold back.

Some headwind, never really a tailwind, never really felt like I got my legs under me. Passed lots of folks, got passed by a few really fast folks.

It was also wet out and getting wetter. Not that it's good for anyone, but falling for me would be bad, so I took the corners and turns really slow. But I am sure that had a negligible effect on my time. I can't use it as an excuse.

Comments:

I hadn't scouted the run out, so when I finally got the shoes/socks on, I stood up and had nowhere to go. It was confusing since the runners were going right by the bike in, but I couldn't figure out how they got there. I yelled to wendy "where do I go out?" and she pointed the way.

Duh.

Mike was still there when I got there, but left and said "you'll catch me"
What would you do differently?:

Know the course?

Comments:

I started out and just wanted to stop already :) I started my tri fast cadence run, again I wasn't racing it but I pushed a bit. I had my watch but I wasn't keeping splits or elapsed time. I passed a couple but got passed a lot, as is usual for the run. Saw duggar and van paulus out there.

I could see mike way ahead, for a while at least, then he just got further and further away. He ended up beating me by about 3.5 minutes, most of that from the run. I just didn't have it to go any faster. Even though I wasn't racing it, it was as fast as my fitness would allow. Was fairly happy with the pace, for me, though, and hip wasn't hurting, so I was having fun.

Event comments:

This is the third year for this race, but my first time. I will definitely do this one again. If one was in shape and it was dry, that course could be utterly hammered.
