Pre-race routine:

I wasn't planning on doing this race and thought my season was over after Lobsterman, but a friend talked me into doing this the night before and my earlier plans had changed. There were still slots available so I decided to give it try.

Woke up at 4:45am, took a quick shower, ate a bowl of cereal and made a cup of coffee for the road. Arrived at Wallis Sands Park in Rye, NH at 6:15am. Transition area and registration were still being set up.
Event warmup:

Put on wetsuit and walked over to start areas. This was another ocean swim. Went for a quick warm up swim to get acclimated to the cold water (60). Ate Gel right before start.
Swim
  • 09m 5s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was happy with my swim. I stayed a little to the outside so it added some time, but stayed away from other swimmers. There seemed to be a lot of fast swimmers in my wave as well. The cold water really effects my swim, both breathing and power.
What would you do differently?:

More open water swimming.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

They didnt track transition times. But overall, I was happy with T1. Wet suit came off fairly easily (no wetsuit strippers). I also still put on my cycling shoes in T1. I also dont do a running mount. Maybe something to practice this off season.
Bike
  • 43m 45s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 19.89 mile/hr
Comments:

Transition times are included in official bike time. Had a little trouble getting into the big ring at the start and took a mile to get HR to lower a bit before I settled in. Only 2 people past me. One of my team mates at the beginning and then another person on the final mile. There was a lot of headwind once you turned onto the ocean road and slowed me down a bit. I felt a lot of lactic acid in my legs. Overall, I was happy with my bike, especially since I still use a road bike.
What would you do differently?:

Look at starting in big ring. Work on running start.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition times not posted. Mounted bike on rack, took off helmet and shoes. Put on running shoes and off I went. I ran the long way out of the transition area though and could have saved another 10-15 seconds (could have put me under my goal of 1:15).
What would you do differently?:

learn quickest way to exists before start.
Run
  • 22m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Running is still my weakest leg. Legs felt stiff. Was happy with negative splits though. Not sure I could have gone any faster either.
What would you do differently?:

more running in off season.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Drank water and then made a Hammer Recoverite.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am not a fast runner.

Event comments:

I would do this race again next year if it fits in my schedule.
