Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 5:00am for an 8am race start. Breakfast of 8oz glass of water with about 1/3 pouch of Hammer Perpetuem 2 PowerBar Fruit Smoothie Bars. NO Coffee, No Caffine. Shower and put on race clothing. Mid Weight tights on bottom with Zoot Tri-fit short over so I would have the pockets for carrying fuel. Matching mid weight long sleeve compression top with my lucky race jersey over. Black Frank Shorter running hat. Black fleece "magic" gloves. Layered over with my some throw away's.
Event warmup:

5 mins light jogging. Dynamic warmup drills from Bobby McGee's "Run Workouts in a Binder"
Light stretching of my lower back because it was stiff

Comments:

I was very pleased with my effort. I was going for a Boston Qualifier of 3:15. Made that by 14 minutes! The last 6 miles were tough, but not killer.
What would you do differently?:

Ithink I could have pushed a little more in the middle of the race and gotten under 3 hours. Probably should have taken in more gel, as I had on my training runs. That might have given me more energy for the last 6. Next time I'd like to try compression socks to see if that makes my legs feel better.

Post race
Warm down:

I was pretty out of it at the end. Just walked through the food line, picked up my finisher's medal and hat and made my way to the recovery tent. No warm-down other than walking an some light stretching. Took a 10min ice bath as soon as I got home, 90mins after event.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first marathon, so I didn't know how much I could push myself through the middle of the race. I had gone 24 miles in training, but that was at a 15 seconds per mile slower pace than what I averaged during the race. At the 1/2 way point, I felt like I could run faster but I was worried about blowing up, so I held back. Next time I may try and put in a middle surge of around 10sec per mile faster than race pace for around 6 or 7 and see what happens.

Event comments:

It was a well run race, and this is only the third year. I think this will become a very popular race in the future because of the time of the year. Pretty much perfect marathon weather.
