Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am. Local races are easier, get to sleep in my own bed. Showered, breakfast - chocolate soy milk and 2 fig newtons. Picked up my wife's running buddy and went to the race site. My wife and her buddy were running the half. I felt ok, not great, but not bad either. Still in shock over what I was going to do that day. Kind of numb, not sure what to expect out of me. Temps were much higher than I had anticipated for the event. Up until a week ago, we had been experiencing below normal avg temp (10-20 deg below avg). Training in January was not at the level i had planned. Vacation to Disney, cold, sickness, work related issues, etc. (normal life of an age grouper).
Event warmup:

None. 26.2 miles to warmup.

Comments:

Miles 1-6 were great. Heart rate low, breathing low. Mile markers were going by quickly. Used the crowds on the course to get energy. Tried not to think about how far it is to go. The loop thru Market Common was great, lots of crowd support. Mile 8 began the section on Ocean Blvd. Almost 10 miles on the Blvd, lots of things to distract you, hotels, crowds, ocean, beach houses, etc. Only problem with this section, 15 - 20 mph headwind. Felt like hill training at times. Mile 11 is where the half runners were separated from the full. Got lonely at that point. Made it thru the halfway point in 2:20. So far so good. Noticed my black tri top was streak with white lines. I have a love hate relationship with temps. Hate being cold at the beginning of the run, but i do run better. If temps are too hot, I have trouble with overheating. Heart rate goes thru the roof and I have to go much slower that i want too. Mile 16, have to start slowing down. Breathing is still good, not too labored, but the heart rate is just too high. Friend came along about mile 18 and ran with me from that point to the finish. Good and bad. Nice to have a distraction, but wanted to punch him for not suffering like i was. Mile 18 was also the turn around point. Tail wind, which means higher body temp because you are going with the wind. The finish was getting closer. Time to suffer a little bit. Ran when i could, walked otherwise. Stopped at the Med tent at mile 21. Chaffing issues under the arms. Held up my arms and the med people coated me with vaseline. Much better. This section of the course was ok. Harder for spectators to get into these areas. So crowds were nonexistent. Mile 25 - Broadway @ the Beach. Band playing - Yesssss. People. Yesssss. One mile to go. Yessssssss. Final water station. First time that I was in need of water. Mouth was dry. Walked thru the aid station and ran to the finish. Last mile was a minute faster than the 2 previous miles. Family and friends at the finish. Got the medal, nice medal in the shape of flip flops.
What would you do differently?:

Train better in the month before the marathon. Still need to work on nutrition. Not able to eat any thing after mile 15. Stomach wanted to rebel, so I backed off. Didn't lose anything along the way. Nausea at times. Not sure if this is heat related or not.
Post race
Warm down:

Stagger, Stumble. Limp, Shuffle. Went to eat at McAlister's Deli. Can only eat half of a grilled chicken baked potato. Endurox is my friend. Eating every 2 hours to get thru the initial recovery phase.

Event comments:

Great support from the race folks. Very well run race.

Race is over!!! I am recovering very well. Little soreness in the muscles, but nothing major. Wow. Thought it would take me days to be able to walk again.

Course: Nice course this year. For the first time, it was a course that i wanted to run. Begins and ends at the MB Pelicans baseball field. Down Hwy 17 business, past the airport and into the Market Common area (shopping and restaurants). Down Ocean Blvd for almost 10 miles. Hotels, beach, residential area, nice changes of scenery. Out to the Grande Dunes area, 17 business for a very short time, then over to the running trails along 17 bypass and finish along grissom parkway back to the baseball field.
