Swim
Comments: Really need to work on swimming efficiency. I ended up using single-sided breathing on every left hand stroke which worked out fine. Also need to continue working on siting since I was going off course quite a bit, especially in the beginning. Overall a descent swim for me though and I proved to myself I can swim the distance and be fine for the rest of the event. What would you do differently?: Work on swimming efficiency with a coach. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit strippers were a nice surprise since no one mentioned they would be there. It was quite a long jog from the swim exit to the transition and I ran the whole way to the transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing, good transition. Bike
Comments: When the bike started I though I was going to be in trouble. I decided to try having my shoes already clipped in and it didn't go as planned. Because of people having trouble clipping in had to hit the brakes and lost a shoe so I had to run back and get it. Then when I went to shift into the big ring my chain came off, so I had to stop and put it back on. Then it was hammer time, I came out swinging and never slowed down. Was putting up a good pace into the head and crosswinds, then when I made the turn around on 146, I put the hammer down and average 25mph on the way back in. What would you do differently?: Practice more with shoes already clipped in. Transition 2
Comments: Forgot to take my helmet off and had to run back to the rack, then I had to pee before I started running so I hit up the port-a-potty. What would you do differently?: Don't forget to take the helmet off and pee before the race starts Run
Comments: Started off with a good pace, first two miles were at 8:15, but then started to call off quickly. My quads felt like they were about to explode and it had me rethinking my hammering down on the bike. But I met my overall goal which was to beat 9:30 miles so I can't complain. The bridge at the end killed and I wasn't able to use the downhill as much as I should have been able to. What would you do differently?: Hill work on the Kemah bridge to strengthen my legs. Post race
Warm down: Relaxed with some water and honey milk and waited on a friend to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Quads were about to explode on the run, so I need more brick workouts at the race distance. Need to get more efficient on the swim if I want to be competitive. Event comments: Great race and very well organized. I didn't expect the boat start to happen on time and it didn't. The course was fun and fast, the volunteers were excellent and every intersection had police officers. Aaron did a great job and I look forward to running this event again next year. Woke up early, 3am, so I could eat breakfast and get to the transition early. Ate a bowl of cereal and a banana with some coffee.
Ended up having to sit on the boat for a very long time, about 2 hours between when they started loading and we finally got started. Did some light stretching while waiting on the boat.
