Pre-race routine:

Left home on Monday after trick or treat. Got down to PCB on Wend. morning and checked into condo and went and did registration. Went out for a ride in the afternoon. Thursday got up and swam with BT group and then did a ride with Jim. Friday morning got up did a short swim then Bike and Run. Then I put my feet up for the rest of the day. After swim I had pancakes for breakfast. Chicken Wrap for Lunch. Had Small amount of Plain whole wheat Pasta with just cheese, Chicken, and broccoli.

Got up about 4:00 am to get some food down and relax. Ate a english muffin with Peanut butter and had some Powerbar perform. Got everything together and my buddy Keith came over to the condo and walked to T1 with me. He was a huge help both in carrying my stuff but also in just talking to me to keep the nerves down. After I pumped up the tires and put drinks on the bike I went into the boardwalk hotel to stay warm and chill out. About 25 min till 7:00 am I put on the wetsuit and walked outside with about 15 min till we start. Also took my last gel on the way to the beach. At the beach went over and saw the family and said I woud see them in a few hours.
Event warmup:

No real warmup. Just walked out to beach and got my cap and googles on and took in the cool site of 2500 people on the beach ready to do an ironman.
Swim
  • 1h 10m 11s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Mass start to the swim. I started out wide right and let the current take me towards bouy. The swim went well found good water right away and only a small amount of contact. Alittle more contact around the first bouy but not to bad. After that it was fine. I found open water and was able to keep a good pace the rest of the way. I did 34 first lap and 35 second lap. On the second lap it was wide open for me I had open water from start to finish. Overall I am very happy with how the swim went.
What would you do differently?:

Some day I need to learn to find some feet and draft.

Comments:

I did not thnk I was going that slow but I did take alot of time to get everything on for the bike. I did not change clothes kept on 2011 Team Toledo Gear. Put on Calf sleves and arm warmers. I think I needed both but I need to hurry up. I did walk from the bag pick up to change room.
T1 overall - 1870
T1 Division - 286
After T1 overall 916 and 158 in division
What would you do differently?:

I just need to hurry up. It was my first and Next time I will move alot quicker. From my times verses overall and division i need to ge alot faster.
Bike
  • 5h 55m 28s

Comments:

Overall very happy with the bike. I followed the plan. THe first 30 miles were easy. THe first 30 were into the wind so I kept the pace steady but did not push at all. Mostly flat a few rollers but nothing to get out of the saddle. The next 60 I pushed the pace alittle but just wanted to keep the cadence about 85. Alot of people around all day and just kept to my pace and passed alot of people and got passed alot. The wind was at our back for the last 50 miles or so and I kept the cadence the same but I was able to get the speed up to over 20 to 21 MPH for the last part for the ride untill I turned back onto Beach road. Felt great whole ride. Pacing was just where I wanted to be at 18.9 MPH. I had to stop and pee 5 times during the ride. This cost me a bit of time. Nutrition was good I had about 6 powerbar gels and 2 bags power bar gel blast (each bag 1.5 gels). So a total of about 9 gels. Started ride with full bottle of Hammer Perpetum 6 scoops = about 750 cal. Changed out bottle at special needs with another bottle some 750 cal. No solids on the ride all liquid diet was perfect.
What would you do differently?:

I need to just pee on the bike and not stop. That could save me 5 min. I need to get faster. Lost 260 spots on bike.

Comments:

This went better than T1 picked up the pace a bit took a little extra time to put lube on the feet. I am glad I did.
T2 overall - 1161
T2 Division - 192
After T2 overall 880 and 174 in division
What would you do differently?:

Just go fast. I should be able to cut 2 min off.
Run
  • 4h 08m 52s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 09m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my first marathon so I had no idea what to expect. I started off fast and realized that I need slow down and stick to the plan. For the first 13 miles I set in at a pace of about 8:50 per mile pace plus waling through water stops. One glass of coke and water at each stop. Only coke and water for the whole run. After the 13 mile turn around I saw the wife and kids and friends. I felt great at that point. No issues at all. I decided to keep the pace right under 9:00 per mile plus walking to drink. I was able to keep this pace till about mile 18 and I started to get tired. Lost pace after 18 miles but I was able to keep it going. Never had to stop running between water stations. No GI issues all day. After mile 18 the pace was about 10 min. per mile. Able to pick it up for the last 2 miles. This was my first Marathon so no complaints.
What would you do differently?:

For this race I dont have any changes I would have made. For future races I will push harder and enjoy the suck for the last 8 miles of the run. I dont want to leave anything on the course.
Post race
Warm down:

Went and got my finishers photo and sat down for the about 15 min. After that I Talked with the family and gathered up my stuff and went back to the condo.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

For me I stuck to the plan and I had a great race. Next time I will push harder during the run and bike. Overall great plan and I had a smile allday.

Event comments:

Great race. Loved the venue and the course. Being form the midwest flat is good. I will do this race again.
